2nd, 3rd places won by BMS The Brundrett Middle School seventhgrade Lady Marlins took charge early in the Jan. 30 Faith Academy tournament in Victoria, coming in second in the tournament; the eighth-graders brought home the third-place trophy. The seventh-grade girls started strong in the first round and held the Goliad Tigerettes to 10 points, winning 27-10. Madison Ray accounted for half the Lady Marlins’ score, putting in 14 points. Summer Hernandez was second-highest scorer with 9, and Brittany Flippo and Carlie Munoz each put in 2.
The girls didn’t fare as well in the second round, losing to the All Star Cobras, 28-19. The Lady Marlins fell behind 9-3 in the first period and although they competed in the second and fourth quarters, they were outscored in the third. Hernandez accounted for 14 of the Lady Marlin points, with Emily Roberson putting in 3 and Ray coming up with 2.
In contrast, the eighth-grade Lady Marlins dropped their first-round game against Goliad, 22-16, with the Tigerettes scoring strongly in the second and fourth quarters. Savanna Ortiz hit 13 to lead the Lady Marlins, with Vivian Frank putting in 2 and Marion Smith hitting 1 free throw. Scoring by quarters
In the second round of the tourney, however, the eighth-graders trounced the Wildcats from Victoria’s Howell Middle School, 34-18. The Lady Marlins edged out the Wildcats 8-6 in the first period and continued to widen the lead, outscoring their opponents 10-4 in both the second and third quarters. Ortiz once again led the scoring with 18 points. Chase Hagedorn followed with 8, Susana Valdivia hit 4 and Marion Smith and Kellie Owens put in 2 apiece.
