Winter Sounds will showcase Susan Gibson
     The Winter Sounds concert, featuring Susan Gibson, will be held at the Port Aransas Community Theatre, 2327 State Hwy. 361, on Monday, Feb. 8, at 7 p.m. Gibson wrote “Wide Open Spaces”, the Grammy award-winning song by the Dixie Chicks.

     This next P.A. Movie Time, set for Friday, Feb. 19, stars Bob Hope and Dorothy Lamour. The free showing of “My Favorite Brunette,” will be in the city council chambers, at City Hall, 710 W. Ave. A. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. and the movie starts at 6:55 p.m.

Mardi Gras parade is Feb. 16
     Take your show on the road on Fat Tuesday, Feb. 16. The annual Mardi Gras parade, sponsored by the Port Aransas Leisure Society (PALS), will leave at 5 p.m. from the corner of Beach and Station streets. Paraders are invited to walk or take the ride of their choice.

Coeckelenbergh to study with Council of Europe
     Katie Coeckelenbergh, a junior at Texas A & M University at College Station has accepted a two-month summer position as a study visitor with the Council of Europe in Strasbourg, France. The Council of Europe is the oldest European intergovernmental organization and brings together 47 member states, representing some 800 million Europeans.

Docents to draw winning ticket
      Port Aransas Museum docents will continue to sell tickets for a drawing for a gourmet dinner for six through this Saturday, Feb. 6, when the drawing will be held. The winning ticket will be drawn at 1 p.m. (not at noon, as previously reported) on Saturday, at the museum, on the corner of Brundrett and Alister streets.

First Friday to feature ‘Hearts for the Arts’
      Hearts for the Arts will be the theme of the First Friday reception, tomorrow, Feb. 5, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the art center, 323 N. Alister St. “Hearts for the Arts,” an annual exhibit and silent auction of works with a Valentine theme, is a fundraiser for the art center. Works featured in the auction are donated to the center by various member artists.

Boy’s birth announced
      Brad Johnson and Thrisha Moreno of Port Aransas announce the birth of their son, Hayden Lawrence Johnson. The infant was born on Saturday, Jan. 30, 2010, at 4:30 a.m. at Corpus Christi Medical Center Bay Area. He weighed 6 pounds, 13 ounces and measured 18 inches long. Maternal grandmother is Theresa Hawes of Beeville.

Dolphin is headed for SeaWorld
      Donley the dolphin is getting some new digs. Donley, who was found stranded on the beach south of Access Road 1A on Nov. 3, has undergone a successful rehabilitation, and wildlife authorities have decided to give the young dolphin a new home at SeaWorld in San Antonio.

Tate acquitted on faked death charge
Rockport woman still faces misdemeanor charges in connection with incident
      A jury has found a woman innocent of a charge she helped her brother fake his own death by drowning at the beach in Port Aransas. The jury in 117th District Judge Sandra Watts’ court acquitted Katherine Tate of hindering apprehension, a third-degree felony, on Tuesday, Jan. 26, at the Nueces County Courthouse in Corpus Christi.

Probation assessed in barroom assault
      A 47-year-old man has been sentenced to two years’ probation on a felony assault charge in connection with an incident at a Port Aransas bar in June 2009. In a plea arrangement, Peter Jude Benson pleaded guilty to a second-degree felony charge of aggravated assault on Thursday, Jan. 28, said Steve Feil, a prosecutor with the Nueces County District Attorney’s Office.

Animal Friends to meet Tuesday
      Animal Friends of Port Aransas will hold a meeting at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 9, at the Aransas Harbors club house, 230 S. Cut-off Road. The organization is in the process of developing a volunteer program in conjunction with the Port Aransas Police Department, the agency that oversees operations at the Port Aransas Animal Shelter.

Toni Somers gets published
     Toni Somers’ story has the sweet smell of success. Toni, who lived in Port Aransas for eight years before moving to Missouri late last year, wrote a non-fiction story about gifts of cologne from her loving husband, and the yarn is such a good one that it recently was published in one of the newest “Chicken Soup for the Soul” books.

Ethanol could cause future troubles for marine engines
      People who know marine engines say the addition of ethanol to fuel used in boats may mean an increase in engine problems in the future. Ethanol has been used for some time farther north. John Price, of Island Boat Works, said he’s been seeing boat engines from Fort Worth that have had ethanol in them for years.

Tall ships coming through
      Look for a parade of tall ships to come streaming past Roberts Point around the end of June. Sail 2010, the extension of the group that brought the Colombian Navy training ship ARC Gloria to the Coastal Bend in 2006, will bring at least four, and maybe more, of the sailing vessels here just in time for the Independence Day holiday.

New fire truck
      The Port Aransas Volunteer Fire Department received its brand-new aerial platform truck, on Friday, Jan. 29. The Crimson brand vehicle cost $924,000. The department’s old aerial platform truck was a 20-year vehicle that had become mechanically unreliable. Fire Chief Scott Mack manipulates controls while standing on the platform, positioned high above the ground.

Ferguson and Johns are retired air traffic controllers who worked for the Federal Aviation Administration at the Fort Worth Air Route Traffic Control Center near the Dallas Fort Worth airport their entire careers.
