Dead whale washes ashore

Species unknown

A dead whale, believed to be a baleen type, washed ashore on Mustang Beach near Marker 30 on Monday morning, Feb. 8.

It took three pieces of heavy machinery to push and pull the whale into a burial site created in the dunes.

A crowd of about 200 gathered to watch the process that started about 8 a.m., as wildlife officials probed the body for most of the day. Actual burial took place the following morning.

The Thursday, Feb. 11, print and online editions of the South Jetty will have complete details.
