Patteson steps down; Kocurek stepping up
With the resignation of head boys’ coach Paul Patteson, junior varsity coach Joe Kocurek will take over varsity coaching duties and Brundrett Middle School coach Brian Flack will add JV coaching duties to his list.
Patteson, who resigned late Monday, citing family reasons, will continue to teach through this school year, Athletic Director Steve Reaves said. Patteson’s schedule includes classes in government and economics and in world history.
Patteson did not immediately return messages from the South Jetty.
“I want to thank Paul for all he’s put into the program and for his hard work, and wish him all the best,” Reaves said.
However, he also said he has complete confidence in Kocurek and Flack.
Kocurek noted that coaching is something he’s done all his life, taking a break recently for family reasons of his own. He’s ready to undertake the program now, however, he said.
“It’s a good time, it’s a good place, they’re a good bunch of kids,” Kocurek said. “We’re going full speed ahead.”
However, he said there wouldn’t be any big changes ahead in the basketball program.
“I want (players) not to have to think about what they’re doing,” he said. “I want them to enjoy the game and to work hard. They’ve just got to get the ball in the hoop.”
