Waffle sales to benefit student trip

Buying a waffle will help send a Port Aransas kid to Washington D.C.

Brundrett Middle School eighth graders will hold a waffle breakfast at the Olsen Elementary School cafeteria as a fundraiser on Sunday, Dec. 13. The breakfast will be from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

The cost is $5 for all you can eat.

Sixteen students are raising money for an educational trip they want to take to Washington June 9-12. The trip will include tours of monuments, museums and government facilities.

The group is trying to raise $1,500 per student, according to Kristi Longanecker, a BMS teacher who is coordinating efforts for the group. So far, they have raised a total of about $1,200, Longanecker said.

In addition to serving waffles, the students also are raising money by selling Christmas cards. (Folks interested in buying Christmas cards should contact Longanecker by calling her at BMS at 749-1200, ext. 332. Cards also will be available for purchase at the waffle breakfast.)

In addition, the students might raise money by putting on a spaghetti dinner, Longanecker said. They also have held several bake sales and likely will hold more, she said.

The students have received a $2,500 grant from the Port Aransas Education Foundation to help pay for the trip.
