Museum lecture to discuss 1919 storm and aftermath
The Port Aransas Museum has scheduled a 2010 Historical Lecture Series, with plans for it to be an annual winter series.
The inaugural lecture will be on Monday, Nov. 9.
Wine and cheese will be served at the museum at 7 p.m. and the presentation will begin at 8 p.m .in the Community Center, 408 N. Alister St.
The presentation on the 1919 storm by Jim Moloney will be a fitting end to the 2009 hurricane season.
The 1919 storm destroyed much of Port Aransas, and in many cases rearranged buildings that remained.
A history of the storm has not been published until now. Murphy Givens, Caller-Times columnist, has collected the tales of survivors and newspaper accounts of the time and woven them into a gripping narrative of death and survival.
Moloney organized photographs from the aftermath of the hurricane to give an understanding of the destruction and the clean-up task facing the battered city.
Moloney, a partner in Energy Gas Compression and collector of postcards and other paper items of Corpus Christi history, will present a summary of the new book, “1919 – The Storm,” which will include a slide show of the devastation.
The book will be available for purchase at the presentation.
