Homecoming slated during Marlin Classic
In an unplanned departure from tradition, homecoming at Port Aransas High School will be held in November rather than January.
The reason, according to PAHS Principal Travis Longanecker, is that the district committee makes up the basketball schedule, and this year, the schedule did not include any Friday night home games.
“It’s not our call,” Longanecker said.
Other schools in the district have football teams, which Port Aransas does not. In
Texas, the reigning tradition is that homecoming is held during football season in the fall.
Longanecker said he met with student leaders to decide how to handle the situtation. The student council leaders held a vote with student council members, and Friday, Nov. 20, was selected for homecoming.
“It’s our 30th year, and they want it to be special. A lot of people will be in town because the following week is Thanksgiving, and we hope to parlay the Marlin Classic crowd into a homecoming crowd,” Longanecker said.
The Marlin Classic is scheduled Thursday through Saturday, Nov. 19- 21.
The coronation will be held after the Marlin game that Friday night, followed by the homecoming dance.
Voting for homecoming duchesses was held Thursday, Oct. 22.
Senior duchesses are Emily Scott and Katelin Dupnik, junior duchess is Kelsey Ortiz, sophomore duchess is Bridget Aycock and freshman duchess is Anna Roberson.
