Rock out at Roberts Point Park
      Rock out with Victims of Circumstance at the Sunset Sounds concert tomorrow, Friday, Sept. 11. The sixth Sunset Sounds concert of the season will be on Friday, Sept. 11, at 7 p.m. in the Patsy Jones Amphitheater in Roberts Point Park. Victims of Circumstance is a Port Aransas band that plays blues, oldies, classic rock, country and one-hit wonders.

     The Art Center for the Islands held its First Friday art reception on Friday, Sept. 4, featuring ‘Men at Work. In the photo at right, attendees enjoyed refreshments while viewing the walls of art.

      The Parrot Heads of Port Aransas will phlock together for fun and business tonight, Thursday, Sept. 10, at 6:30 p.m. Kay and Doug Loeffler will host the meeting at the Aransas Harbors Condominium meeting room, 230 S. Cutoff Rd. Members should bring a drink of preference and a snack to share as new adventures and socials are planned.

      Project F.R.E.E. is coming to Port Aransas. Focused Risk-Reduction Education and Empowerment is a program funded by the Texas Department of Health Services, providing free education and testing for community members at risk for communicable diseases.

Raising babies, releasing babies
      The ARK is not in the breeding business. Yes, we raise baby birds and turtles and release them when they’re ready to go, but we do not allow or encourage animals in our care to breed and produce young. We’re not allowed to do this under the terms of our permits. Occasionally, to use a hackneyed phrase, due to circumstances beyond our control, babies are born.

Remains stolen, recovered
Family scatters man’s ashes in Gulf off Port Aransas
      An urn containing a man’s cremated remains has been recovered after being stolen from a pickup truck in a Port Aransas parking lot. The urn contained the ashes of Bob Parnell, a 71-year-old Tennessee resident who loved fishing in Port Aransas and visited the town many times over the last 25 years. He died on July 1.

Port Aransas boat snared in federal sting operation
      A Port Aransas vessel was one of seven Texas Gulf coast charter boats targeted in a recently revealed government sting operation that resulted in charges against owners and operators for allegedly operating without proper permits. The investigation was conducted by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.

      Two familiar faces from the U.S. Post Office in Port Aransas are about to become a little less familiar. Sandy Allen and Joe Torres will retire soon. Allen’s last day at work will be Wednesday, Sept. 16, after nearly 29 years on the job.

      Pitch in and help clean up the beach on Saturday, Sept. 26. Keep Port Aransas Beautiful needs help cleaning up Port Aransas beaches. In a joint effort with the Texas General Land Office, KPAB is hosting the 24th annual Adopt-A-Beach Clean-up as part of a state-wide effort.

      Keep Port Aransas Beautiful will host its Appreciation Day program, “Port Aransas, It’s Our World,” on Tuesday, Sept. 22. From 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. attendees will sample foods from a variety of countries at the Port Aransas Community Center, 408 N. Alister St.

Shady business
      Workers erect pilings as a first step in construction of a shade structure at the Port Aransas Animal Shelter on Thursday, Sept. 3. The Friends of the Port Aransas Animal Shelter organization raised the money for the structure. A puppy died this summer in an outdoor kennel at the shelter, possibly from the heat.

      The Port Aransas Boatmen, Inc. met on Wednesday, Sept. 2, to elect board members and officers. The results were as follows. Mike Miglini is the new president, Bruce Staffel is vice president and 2010 Deep Sea Roundup chair. Sheila Flores is the new secretary and Jack Nichols is treasurer.
