Sunset Sounds concert is Friday
ALOHA DAVE AND THE TOURISTS TO PLAY
      Relax on the waterfront and enjoy some island-style oldies and surf music at the Sunset Sounds concert tomorrow. The third Sunset Sounds concert of the season will be Friday, July 10, at 7 p.m. in the Patsy Jones Amphitheater in Roberts Point Park. Aloha Dave & the Tourists will perform oldies and surf music.

Yoga on the beach is set for Saturday
      Enjoy the sunrise over the Gulf and stretch out at Yoga on the Beach Saturday, July 11. Nancy Myers will instruct the free class beginning at 8 a.m. next to the Horace Caldwell Pier at the end of Beach Street. The public is invited to attend the class held the second Saturday of the month. The City of Port Aransas Parks and Recreation Department sponsors the program. Call community programs director Pam Greene at 749-4158 for more information.

Parrot Heads perch tonight
      Parrot Heads of Port Aransas will “phlock” on high tonight, Thursday, July 9, at 6:30 p.m. at the upstairs Tiki bar area of the Beach Lodge, 2016 S. On the Beach. Members should bring any aluminum pull-tabs collected or nonperishable food items for the Food Pantry. Attendees without items to donate should be prepared to make a monetary donation. New members are always welcome and anyone interested in the club’s activities, charitable efforts, or the tropical lifestyle is encouraged to attend.

WIC mobile unit to visit
      Representatives from the WIC (Women, Infants and Children) nutritional program will be in Port Aransas on Monday, July 13. Hours are 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 1:30 to 3:30 p.m., at the Family Center IGA parking lot, 416 S. Alister St. For questions or an appointment, call (361) 767-7777. The program, operated out of the Driscoll Children’s Hospital in Corpus Christi, provides a variety of services for pregnant women, infants and children free of charge to eligible clients.

A pile of Jeeps
      It may have looked like a wreck, but it wasn’t. Getting together on the beach just south of Access Road 1A on Saturday, July 4, several motorists showed off their Jeeps’ climbing abilities by revving them partially up the sides of each other’s vehicles’ tires, creating a jumble of off-road antics.

Mayor wants tax issue aired in public
      Port Aransas Mayor Claude Brown’s tax situation likely will be discussed at a city council meeting July 16, but whether the matter will come up in a session that’s open to the public hasn’t been decided yet. City Attorney Michael Morris has said he is investigating whether Brown has been delinquent in paying property taxes. He said he also is looking into whether it could constitute a city charter violation that could lead to the city council removing him from office.

Holt honored by Legislature
      The Texas House of Representatives recently passed a resolution honoring Scott Holt for achievements he made during his career with the University of Texas Marine Science Institute in Port Aransas. A fisheries biologist, Holt retired from the institute May 1 and now serves as a UTMSI research fellow. The resolution was authored by Rep. Todd Hunter, R-Corpus Christi.

House Bill 3613 gives tax break to disabled vets
      Texas veterans will get a tax break thanks to House Bill 3613. A provision in the bill requires an exemption of the total appraised value of homesteads for Texas veterans who receive 100 percent disability compensation from the United States Department of Veterans Affairs.

Last swim lesson sign up is scheduled for Tuesday
      Register for the final session of summer swim lessons at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, July 14. The two-week sessions will be taught at 9:40 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. Tuesday through Friday, July 21 - 31. Registration and lessons will be held at the Port Aransas Community Park pool, 700 Clark Pkwy. The fee for Port Aransas residents is $6 for first child, $5 for second child and $4 for the third, with a maximum fee of $15 per family. Non-residents will pay $12 for first child, $10 for second child and $8 for the third, with a maximum fee of $30 per family.

Swim-a-thon donations are still being accepted
      The Port Aransas Swim Team members swam their hearts out on Monday, July 6. Team members were participating in a Swim-a-Thon to raise funds for the team. Donors pledged various amounts per lap swum or donated a one-time set amount. Money raised is earmarked for new backstroke flags and a new pace clock. Coach Nana Ward said she was “Very impressed with the hard work of the swimmers.” The number of laps swum averaged between 50 and 100. Some of the youngest, ages five and six, swam as many as 60 to 70 laps.

      Presenting proceeds from the annual Texas SandFest to local non-profit organizations is Elleece Calvert, event director, left, to Bobbie Mussett from Art Center for the Islands; Betty Crawford, SandFest treasurer, second from the right presenting to Jack Dreessen from the Port Aransas Community Theater and Vernett Safford, director of Community Food Pantry. The Texas SandFest is held every year in the spring and draws thousands of people to the island to view the work of master and amateur sand sculptors.

Youngsters ‘Hope’ for big fish
Annual Capt. Hope Devlin Fishing Tournament raised money for scholarships
      The 13th annual Capt. Hope Devlin Fishing Tournament on Saturday, July 4, was a success for everyone involved, according to organizers. The one-day tournament for anglers 16 years and under benefits youth of Port Aransas through scholarships and other programs. This year, enough was raised to provide scholarships to four Port Aransas High School graduates. The Port Aransas Kiwanis Club awarded $21,450 in scholarships to 2008 graduates, part of which was raised by the fishing tournament.

High heat:
Pound pup dies; city cools shelter
      A puppy died recently at the Port Aransas Animal Shelter, possibly from the heat. City officials said they have improved conditions at the shelter since then, and they are working on the possibility of installing air conditioning where there currently is none. A stray female dog and her several young puppies were impounded a few weeks ago, according to Port Aransas Police Chief Scott Burroughs, whose department oversees the animal shelter.

     During the three-day July 4 weekend, police received 24 disturbance calls ranging from arguments to loud music. Officers also received more than 20 reports of illegal fireworks being set off, resulting in warnings and confiscations by police and Port Aransas Fire Chief Scott Mack. MONDAY, JUNE 29 6:31 a.m. • A car was reported vandalized in the 300 block of West Cotter Avenue. 8:25 a.m. • Police received a report of vehicle tires being damaged in the 200 block of Oleander Street.

Flood insurance rates to drop if Port Aransas enters program
      City of Port Aransas Building Official Joe Lamb is working on a project that is expected to reduce Port Aransas property owners’ flood insurance rates. Lamb said he plans to turn in paperwork in about 30 days to the Texas Water Development Board to get the city included in the Community Rating System (CRS), an incentive system developed by the Federal Emergency Management Agency to encourage cities to do a good job of flood plain management.

Man arrested in church break-in after burglar is seen on camera
      A 19-year-old man has been arrested in connection with a Port Aransas church burglary. Travis Elliott Wise was arrested in Victoria on Tuesday, July 7, according to Mark Stokes, a detective at the Port Aransas Police Department. Someone broke into First Baptist Church June 27 and stole computer equipment worth about $1,500, approximately $200 cash and two DVD players worth a total of $340, Stokes said.

      Elizabeth Ann Klostermann and Justin Scott Weaver were married Saturday, June 20, at St. John Lutheran Church in Robstown. Both are former residents of Port Aransas. Train expertise is needed for exhibit at history museum
      The Port Aransas Museum is looking for volunteers who know how to build HO gauge train layouts. HO is a type of scale in which 3.5 mm = 1 real foot. Museum Director Rick Pratt is asking for help constructing a model train layout for the upcoming exhibit, “Taming the Channel; An Epic Story.” The exhibit will depict the building of our jetties. Pratt hopes to finish the exhibit by late this month. “Taming the Channel” will tell the story of the half-century struggle to capture the Aransas Pass.

Mahi mahi popular summertime fish
      During the middle of summer and the height of the fishing tournaments, good fish recipes come in handy. A common and popular offshore fish this time of year is the dolphin or Coryphaena hippurus. This colorful and strong fighting fish is also known as dorado and mahi-mahi. The males are very distinctive with their blunt heads.

      Brian and Margaret Burks of Rockport have announced the engagement of their daughter, Tricia Lynn Rollins of Portland, to Cole Austin McLeod of Portland and formerly of Port Aransas. The prospective groom is the son of David McLeod of Portland and formerly of Port Aransas. The couple plans to wed on Saturday, July 25, at the Corpus Christi Water Gardens.

Trolley route now 45 minutes
      The Port Aransas trolley began running on a new schedule on Monday, June 29. The new schedule makes the trolley’s loop around town 45 minutes long, according to Port Aransas City Manager Michael Kovacs. It previously was an hour long, but the Port Aransas City Council recently eliminated little-used stops to make waits for the shuttle shorter. The deleted stops were at Gulf Waters RV Resort, Sandcastle Drive and on the beach at the south jetty. A stop at Mustang Beach Airport was eliminated but later reinstituted.

A new Wharf
      Ann Bracher Vaughan, from left, Don Morrison, Gary Rodgers, Tom Lovett, Debra Williams and Theresa Clanton cut the ribbon at the new Wharf Restaurant, 500 Cut-off Road. Morrison, Rodgers and Lovett partnered up to open the restaurant, with a grand opening on June 17. Vaughan, Wilcox and Clanton represent the Port Aransas Chamber of Commerce-Tourist Bureau. The Wharf is open seven days a week from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Live music is featured from 7 to 10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.

      Columnist Rachel Pearson continues her journal during her bicycle trip while visiting Australia. The bus dropped me at Launceston, a city on the northern side of Tasmania, just across a small mountain range from the east coast. After a week alone in the mountains, the heavy city air and all the buses and people skeezed me out.

Deep in the ‘heat’ of Texas - observe the changes
      To me, our Texas summers have always consisted of three months: June, July and August. By the second week in September, the weather begins to change (no joke – at least a Texan can tell that it’s changing). But in July, the second week only brings a full awareness of the sweltering heat. You accept it – it is now the norm. But, just as we are transitioning into the middle of summer, many of our birds are transitioning into their so-called winter plumage. They are changing from their breeding plumage to their non-breeding plumage.
