‘Big Daddy’ of saltwater tournaments starts today
The annual onslaught of anglers in Port Aransas begins today, Thursday, July 9 and will continue through Sunday, July 12. They are here for the 74th Deep Sea Roundup. The oldest and largest saltwater fishing tournament on the Texas coast is sponsored by the Port Aransas Boatmen, Inc. Proceeds fund various youth-related activities and scholarships for Port Aransas High School graduates. The family-friendly tournament includes a Piggy Perch Contest for the small fry, as well as junior and adult divisions for bay and offshore anglers. More...

Windy weekend gave surf anglers the edge
The Fourth of July weekend started off great, but unpredicted winds came up and it got rough offshore on Saturday. Bay anglers had it a little better, and the surf anglers reported great catches of speckled trout. Arther Toscano and his friends Pat Forister and James Svoboda came down from San Antonio to fish for the weekend. They took the jetty boat over to St. Joe’s to fish in the surf and came back with limits of speckled trout. More...
South Texas dove hunters are in luck. Not only does the season start earlier than before, the bag limit has increased from 12 to 15. U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service SRC (Service Regulation Committee) has approved the 2009-2010 Texas dove season, including a 70-day season and 15-bird daily bag statewide, and a 16-day early teal season. Harry James Tanner, 65, died Thursday, June 11, 2009 in Corpus Christi. Tanner was a former resident of Port Aransas. He was born Feb. 10, 1944, in Baltimore, Md., to Wallace Daniel and Delores Tanner, and later moved to Colorado, where he attended school. Tanner served in the United States Army during the 1960s, then moved to Port Aransas, where he was employed on a shrimp boat. He later became captain of a crew boat. In 1970 he married Vonnie (Dorris) Tanner of Port Aransas. More...
