The Fourth of July weekend started off great, but unpredicted winds came up and it got rough offshore on Saturday. Bay anglers had it a little better, and the surf anglers reported great catches of speckled trout. Arther Toscano and his friends Pat Forister and James Svoboda came down from San Antonio to fish for the weekend. They took the jetty boat over to St. Joe’s to fish in the surf and came back with limits of speckled trout. More ... The Evans family, right, from San Antonio fished on the Cherokee on Thursday, July 2, with Capt. Tray Clark and mates Thomas Winton and Rene Lopez out of Fisherman’s Wharf. They brought back these red snapper, amberjack and a grouper that weighed in at 115 pounds. The fight lasted an hour on 80-pound tackle. More ... Anglers are revved up about the 35th annual Outboard Fishing Tournament, slated for Friday through Sunday, July 17 – 19, in Port Aransas. Emergency Medical Services Auxiliary sponsors the tournament, exclusively for boats powered by outboard motors, with all proceeds benefiting the Port Aransas Volunteer Fire Department. Registration begins Friday, July 17, from 6 to 10 p.m. at the Port Aransas Civic Center, 700 W. Ave. A. Registration festivities will feature boiled shrimp with chips and dip for $15. The Rick Lauchner family had a reunion in Port Aransas and went fishing out of Deep Sea Headquarters on Sunday, June 28, aboard the Kingfisher with Capt. Dave Sullivan was named Boatman of the Year for 2009, and his son Matt isn’t doing too badly in the fishing department, either. Matt Sullivan, at left in the photo, took the angler, at right in the photo, billfishing recently aboard his boat, the Sea Hawk in Honolulu. The Gulf of Mexico commercial shrimp season for both state and federal waters will open 30 minutes after sunset Wednesday, July 15. John Stark and mate Trent Hannah aboard the Billbusters II on Friday, June 26. They brought in these red snapper, kingfish, shark and wahoo. The largest snapper, caught by Benton, weighed more than 20 pounds. More ... Ryan Barton of Port Aransas and Lubbock caught this 30-inch, 7.77pound trout fishing on the south jetty on Friday, July 3. He was hoping it was a contender in the CCA Star tournament, but it was a little light. Barton, on summer break from Texas Tech, is the son of Alan and Lisette Barton of Houston and Port Aransas. More ... Beverly Stapleton of Aransas Pass caught this warsaw grouper on Wednesday, July 1, fishing aboard the Adventurer with Capt. Jeff Heimann out of Offshore Adventures. More ... Pat Forister, from left, James Svoboda and Arthur Toscano, all of San Antonio, caught these speckled trout in the surf on San Jose Island on the Fourth of July. They used mostly croaker as bait, with a few plastics thrown in. More ... These folks fished with Capt. Jeff Heimann out of Offshore Adventures on July 1, 2009.
