Ready-up for Roundup!
      Anglers of all ages will be in Port Aransas Thursday through Sunday, July 9-12 for the 74th Deep Sea Roundup. The oldest and largest saltwater fishing tournament on the Texas coast is sponsored by the Port Aransas Boatmen, Inc. Proceeds fund various youth-related activities and scholarships for Port Aransas High School graduates. The family-friendly tournament includes a Piggy Perch Contest for the small fry, as well as junior and adult divisions for bay and offshore anglers.

FISHING REPORT
Offshore anglers are in ‘high cotton’
      Offshore fishing is downright great. Billfish are being caught right and left, as well as beautiful snapper, huge dolphin, monster wahoo and boatloads of yellowfin. Capt.Tom Buckner fished aboard the Ciao Bella out of Port Aransas in 60 fathoms on Sunday, June 28. They were one for three on blue marlin and caught a 40-pound wahoo. “The blue marlin are cheap on the rip,” Buckner said. The blue, released by Dominick Pedrotti, was estimated to weigh between 275 and 290 pounds.

      Juan Fierros of San Antonio caught this oversized 39 ½-inch bull redfish while fishing aboard the Island Queen out of Woody’s Sports Center on Saturday, June 20. (Note that Fierros is holding the required oversized redfish tag in his mouth.)

Anglers’ delight
      Kevin Carter of San Antonio, from left, Brandon Santiago, Jameson Santiago and Jordan Santiago, all of Orlando, Fla., and Taylor Carter of San Antonio fished with Capt. Reese Greene and first mate Tim Redman aboard the Bill Busters II out of Woody’s Sports Center on Tuesday, June 23, bringing in this nice catch.

A boatload of tuna
      Every angler aboard the Scat Cat caught his or her limit of yellowfin tuna on this 56-hour tuna trip that departed on Monday, June 22, with Capts. Ronnie Hale and Donnie Lueck out of Fisherman’s Wharf. They also brought in blackfin tuna, dorado, amberjack and red snapper.

Beautiful catch
      One of the first boats in to the weigh station during the Port A Masters/ Fred Rhodes Memorial Fishing Tournament on Saturday, June 27, came in with a box full of dorado, yellowfin tuna and a few others. They also released a blue marlin. From left are Capt. Joe Peirce, Pete Boos, Capt. Will Peirce, and Capt. Mike Bohn. They fished aboard the Paka out of Rockport. The boat is owned by Brent Dennis.

Fishing tournament was rich in billfish and generosity
      The Port Aransas Masters / Fred Rhodes Memorial Fishing Tournament on Saturday, June 27, was graced with good weather, good fishing and generous winners. Plenty of billfish were released, lots of money raised and a good time was had by all. Tournament Director Riley Rhodes said approximately $10,000 was raised for the Fred Rhodes Memorial fund, which benefits youth programs.

Captain Hope Devlin Tourney is Saturday
      The 13th annual Capt. Hope Devlin Fishing Tournament starts with registration tomorrow, Friday, July 3. The one-day tournament for anglers 16 years and under is on Saturday, July 4, from dawn to noon, and benefits youth of Port Aransas through scholarships and other programs.

      Randy Wiesehan, right, and Craig Reedy, both of San Antonio caught this giant dorado fishing aboard the Miss Lainieous out of Port Aransas on Friday, June 26, with owners David and Laine Bradford of San Antonio. They also caught a white marlin and several wahoo that day.

Eight-hour catch
      This group from Port Aransas and Lubbock fished aboard the Caliente with Capt. John Brennan out of Deep Sea Headquarters on Sunday, June 28. From left are Beth Edwards, Keith Banks, Jay Jones, Kelly Owens, Kellie Owens, John Brennan, and Brenda Owens. They caught dog snapper, ling, dorado, Atlantic sharpnose shark, and a limits of red snapper.

Team Slam
      Connor Collins and Jake Roberts, both of Port Aransas, won the redfish division of the 16th Annual Fishing Break Tournament in Port Aransas on Saturday, June 27, at Roberts Point Park. The boys caught the winning 27¾-inch redfish, weighing in at 8.04 pounds, in the bay. They shared the team trophies (one for first place redfish, the other for best boat). Team members not pictured are Janice and Lex Roberts, both of Port Aransas. More than 700 anglers participated in the tournament benefiting the Austin Fire Department.

First keepers
      Hunter, 10, and Preston, 8, Farrell, of Fort Worth, fished with Capt. Gary Einkauf out of Fisherman’s Wharf on Wednesday, June 24. They limited out on these redfish. It was the first time the boys caught keeper redfish. They are the grandsons of Tom and Pam Schmitt of Port Aransas.
