Hometown talent will perform for an evening of fun and relief from the summer heat on Saturday. The Port Aransas Community Theater will present a musical variety show on Saturday, June 27, at 7:30 p.m. A few regular PACT players, including Betty Crawford, Jack Dreessen, Phyllis Layne, Ginny Shaw and David Beane will perform musical numbers, and newcomer Ty Morris will sing and play guitar. Katie Crysup-Sikes will direct. Jason and Elliot Morris will work tech and props. Marion Fersing will play the piano before each show. More ... More than 70 Corpus Christi children took a dolphin watching boat tour that departed from Woody’s Sports Center on Tuesday, June 23. The children were taking part in the National Youth Sports and Wellness Program at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi. SOUTH JETTY Streets all over Port Aransas are getting asphalt overlays as part of the $4.9 million bond passed by voters in November last year. The overlays began June 15, and about three-quarters of the overall project was done at press time on Tuesday, June 23. Workers probably will be finished by July 3, according to Dave Parsons, the city’s planning and projects manager. More ... This portico at a house at the Cinnamon Shore development is an example of parking areas affected by a newly proposed amendment to a Port Aransas city ordinance that controls parking. The ordinance requires that single-family homes and duplexes have at least two open-air parking spots on a driveway or similar surface. Carports and garages don’t count toward those two spots. The proposed amendment would allow carports and porticos to count. The Port Aransas City Council approved a first reading of the amendment on June 18. More ... Summertime has arrived and it is hot, hot outside. Many of us enjoy cooking outside, and there is no reason to heat up the inside by using the oven for your barbecue side dishes. I have two recipes for hot side dishes that don’t heat up the house. I make them in crock-pots. Crock-pots are for more that heating up cheese dip or making a pot roast. These appliances from the 70’s can make casseroles, soups and desserts. I like both of these recipes because you can start them early and tend to other cooking chores or relax outside in the shade. More ... The Port Aransas City Council has decided to give part of Cotter Avenue an additional name: Jerry McDonald Memorial Avenue. The council passed the measure by a 7-0 vote on Thursday, June 18. The move came at the request of Councilman Charles Bujan, to honor the memory of McDonald, the only Port Aransan to die in the Vietnam War. This year is the 40th anniversary of his death. The McDonald name will not replace the Cotter name. It will be an additional name for the part of street that stretches from Station Street to the beach. More ... Residents and visitors are invited to celebrate Independence Day by watching the fireworks display on Saturday, July 4. The city, in conjunction with Charles Butt of H-E-B Food Stores and the Lydia Ann Lighthouse, will present the show starting at “dark-thirty,” or about 9 p.m. The same company that has produced the show for the past several years, Zambelli Fireworks Internationale of Pennsylvania, will present about 45 minutes of fireworks. More ... Start making plans for dealing with trash that accumulates leading up to the Fourth of July. Allied Waste will not collect trash that Saturday because none of the landfills will be open to receive it, said Pat Garrett, executive assistant to the city manager. Residents and businesses whose trash is normally picked up on Saturdays should prepare for no pick up on that holiday, Garrett said. More ... More ... The airport stop is back on the trolley route. The Port Aransas City Council on Thursday, June 18, reinstituted the stop after a request by the Regional Transit Authority. Due to a lack of riders, the council decided three months ago to eliminate the airport stop, along with little-used stops at Gulf Waters RV Resort, Sandcastle Drive and on the beach at the south jetty. A city count of riders tallied only 22 people using the stop at the airport throughout the entire period of Jan. 8-31. More ... If you’ve ever wanted to try your hand at acting or working behind the scenes, this may be the time. The Port Aransas Community Theatre is looking for folks to add to its talent pool for the 2010 season. The theatre will hold open auditions at 2327 State Hwy. 361, on Thursday and Friday, June 25 and 26, and on Tuesday and Wednesday, July 7 and 8, at 7 p.m. Have some refreshments and attend an auditioning workshop and question-andanswer session about the theater before each audition session. More ... Mike and Lydia Firestone of Port Aransas, left, with Charlie and Christy Wilson in front of the helicopter Wilson is now certified to fly. He earned his “wings of gold” in March after 10 years in the Coast Guard, including his four years at the academy and two years of special training in the Naval Flight Training Program. Wilson graduated from Port Aransas High School in 1999, and the Coast Guard Academy in 2003. He and his wife Christy are currently stationed at the U.S. Coat Guard Air Station Houston, where he flies an MH-65C Dolphin helicopter. More ... Gov. Rick Perry has signed legislation that’s expected to provide thousands more dollars for beach cleanup and maintenance in Port Aransas. Perry signed the legislation on Saturday, June 20. House Bill 2276, sponsored by State Rep. Todd Hunter, R-Corpus Christi, was passed by the House and then cleared the Senate on May 26. Port Aransas city officials have said State Sen. Juan “Chuy” Hinojosa, D-McAllen, also made big contributions toward getting the legislation passed. Port Aransas lies in both legislators’ districts. More ... Birding 101, for kids 7 to 16, proved so popular all three sessions booked almost immediately. The third and final class, sponsored by the Coastal Bend Audubon Society and the University of Texas Marine Science Institute, was held at the Leonabelle Turnbull Birding Center in Port Aransas on Thursday, June 18. Students learned how to use binoculars, how to identify birds using field marks, make a bird feeder and sketch birds or plants in the style of James Audubon. The Port Aransas City Council has passed a new ordinance expanding the areas of town where glare from outdoor lighting is prohibited. The council approved a third reading of the ordinance, 6-1, with Councilman Mike Hall voting against it. Councilman Rick Pratt was one of the main proponents of the ordinance. “I couldn’t be more delighted,” Pratt said after the vote. “We’re on our way to being able to see the stars again, to putting that down as one of the attractions in our town.” More ... The Port Aransas Police Department is poised to buy two new pickup trucks to add to its fleet, despite objections from Mayor Claude Brown, a former police officer who said he favored a different kind of vehicle. As I walked out on the boardwalk, I overheard a woman talking to her family and friends. “It’s a shame that they built this sewage treatment plant beside this beautiful place,” she said in a frustrated voice. There are times when you know that you’ll succeed in doing something that might be quite difficult, yet at the time you would bet big money on your success. I attempted a sort of game-winning three-point attempt at the buzzer the other day while doing a hot sweaty chore late in the afternoon. I had to dispose of an old, heavy piece of wood in a dumpster that was yards away, but one side had the lid open, leaving a gaping black hole just inviting me to throw the wood in from an impossibly far distance. The event will draw Mustang owners, from current to classic vintage models, to a celebration that will be a lead up to the 50th birthday of what has been called America’s most popular car, in 2014. More ... The Wetlands Education Center has added a third guided tour to the schedule, on Saturdays. The free tours will now be offered at 10 a.m. on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. The WEC tours will start at the amphitheater next to the University of Texas Marine Science Institute Visitor Center, which is at the east end of Cotter Avenue before the street ends at the beach. The boardwalks at the WEC are ADA accessible, and several benches are scattered throughout the facility. More ... Perform your own poetry or just sit back and be entertained at the Sand Slam tomorrow, Friday, June 26, at the Tarpon Ice House, 321 N. Alister St. Presenting poets must sign up by 7:30 p.m., and the performance starts at 8 p.m. Competing poets must bring at least three selections of their own writing, as three rounds are held before declaring a winner. The evening will begin with an open microphone, available for poetry not original to the presenter. It will then progress to the competition. Performances are limited to three minutes. More ... The Nueces County Historical Commission will celebrate the history of the United States Coast Guard on Mustang Island today, Thursday, June 25, at 10 a.m. in Roberts Point Park. A state historical marker recognizing the Port Aransas Coast Guard command will be commemorated on the east end of the park. The marker is the result of research conducted by Dr. John G. Ford, a Mustang Island historian and head of the Texas historical marker programs in Nueces County. Anita Eisenhauer, president of the NCHC, invites all citizens to attend the event. More ... The monthly free, guided beach walk led by Shirley Fischer will start at 9 a.m. on Friday, June 26, under the purple flag next to Horace Caldwell Pier. Sponsored by the City of Port Aransas Parks and Recreation Department, the walk gives visitors and residents the opportunity to learn about all that washes ashore on Mustang Island beaches.
