Beginner’s luck
     Ashtyn Fletcher, 7, of Rockport caught this kingfish and skipjack on her first fishing trip. She fished aboard the Flipper out of Dolphin Dock on Saturday, June 6, with her dad, Port Aransas Animal Control Officer Alan Fletcher.

FISHING REPORT
Plenty of kingfish and red snapper are out there
      The big, fat red snapper are still out there and they’re hanging out with some juicy friends. Limits of red snapper are still being caught on all of the party boats, along with plenty of kingfish, vermilion snapper, amberjack, grouper, shark and a few other species here and there. Bay anglers reported good catches, mostly of redfish and black drum, with some trout sprinkled in.

Luck o’ the Irish
      Ryan McDaniel, 16, of San Antonio, caught and released his first sailfish recently whiile fishing aboard the Irish Wake out of Port Aransas.

      These folks caught barracuda, ling, kingfish and limits of red snapper while fishing aboard the Gulf Eagle with Capt. Keith Schoolcraft out of Deep Sea Headquarters on Sunday, June 21.

Thirty drum and a red
      These anglers fished with Capt. Frank Duxstad on Friday June 18, when they caught these black drum and one red fish. The fish were caught on shrimp in the Shamrock area. From left are Doug Frieling of Austin, Tom Ford of Taylor and Port Aransas, Steve Schmidt of Hutchinson, Kans., Harry Harstad of Georgetown and Duxstad. Brent Walden of Port Aransas, not pictured, also fished with the group.

Capt. Hope Devlin Fishing Tournament slated for the July 4
      The 13th annual Capt. Hope Devlin Fishing Tournament is all about kids. The one-day tournament for anglers 16 years and under is on Saturday, July 4, from dawn to noon, and benefits youth of Port Aransas through scholarships and other programs. The tournament is named in honor of Capt. Hope Devlin, who, before succumbing to breast cancer, was active in starting the Port Aransas Kiwanis Club and loved to fish. Kiwanians sponsor the tournament each year, with proceeds going to provide scholarships for Port Aransas High School graduates.

      These anglers fished aboard the Scat Cat with Capt. Russell Sanquinet out of Fisherman’s Wharf on Saturday, June 20. They caught limits of red snapper, ling, shark and pompano.

Powder Puff girls know how to fish
      A team of four women - three from Rockport-Fulton and one from Friendswood - took the overall prize in the 26th annual Powder Puff fishing tournament June 19-20. Tami Domasco and Connie Schubert of Fulton, “Cha Cha” Plant of Rockport and Randi Aery of Friendswood, took the overall prize after entering the tournament’s guided division. They fished with Rockport guide Tommy Ranzinsky.

Looks like a contender
      Rachael Turner of Houston shows off the speckled trout she caught as a contestant in the Texas Lures & Leaders Tournament on Friday, June 19. Giving her a congratulatory squeeze is Mike Cropper, also of Houston. The tournament benefits Girls Incorporated of Greater Houston ad the Texas Parks and Wildlife organizations. The tournament headquartered at the Island Moorings Yacht Club and Marina in Port Aransas.

     Molly Moats, 5, of Port Aransas released this undersized redfish she caught fishing in Port Aransas with her dad, Dave Moats Sr., on Monday, June 15. It was her first catch.

PAM registration is tonight
TOURNEY HONORS RHODES, BENEFITS YOUTH
      Fish and help raise money for area youth this weekend. The Port Aransas Masters Billfish Tournament benefiting the Fred Rhodes Memorial Fund is starts today, Thursday, June 25, and ends with a brunch and awards on Sunday, June 28. Fred Rhodes, who died in 1986, was a Live Oak County rancher, frequent visitor to Port Aransas and avid fisherman. The Fred Rhodes Memorial Pavilion in Roberts Point Park is named in his honor.
