Awe, horror, joy part of trip
      Port Aransas kids experienced emotions that ranged from joy to awe to horror when they toured Washington D.C. recently. They played in jet fighter flight simulators at the Air and Space Museum at the Smithsonian Institution. They gaped at President Barack Obama’s motorcade as it cruised past. They toured a ton of memorials. They even found themselves on the fringes of a tragic event that made international news.

Camp Aranzazu field trip is slated
      Wanna go to camp for a day? Register now to go on the City of Port Aransas Parks and Recreation Department Camp Aranzazu field trip tomorrow, Friday, June 19. The bus will depart from H.G. Olsen Elementary School cafeteria, 100 S. Station St., promptly at 9 a.m. and will return at 5 p.m. Space is available for 15 people, age 8 and up. A full day of programs is planned, including a challenge course, archery, kayaking and more. Register at the parks and recreation department, 739 W. Ave. A. The fee is $45 per person.

School board reorganizes
      In keeping with tradition, the Port Aransas Independent School District Board of Trustees reorganized and elected new officers at its June 10 meeting. Chuck Borders was elected president at the board’s first regular meeting since the May election. Re-elected trustees Margaret Price, Place 1, and Ann Appling, Place 7, were sworn in, and the board then convened in executive session to discuss the reorganization. Returning to open session, Borders was elected president, Rick Adams was elected vice president and Rita Reed was elected secretary.

Getting creative
      From left, nine-year-olds Ryan DeFily of Burnett, Anna Roach of Lago Vista, Sofia Heggen of Lago Vista and Sofia’s twin sister, Thira, create artwork during an art camp at the Art Center for the Islands on Tuesday, June 16. Art Camp is designed for children in the third through fifth grades. The next session is scheduled for July 6-10, at a cost of $15 per student for the week. A few spaces in that session still were open at press time. Registration deadline is June 30.
