A Port Aransas surf team captured first place in the Texas Gulf Surfing Association’s state championships on Saturday, June 13, at Bob Hall Pier on Padre Island.

The Board House surf shop team prevailed over about 10 other surf teams from cities including Galveston, Corpus Christi and South Padre Island.

It’s been 20 years since a Port Aransas team won in the state championships, said Ted Nicholson, co-owner of the Board House.

“We’re really proud to bring (the championship) back to Port Aransas,” Nicholson said.

Team members included Corey Williams, who took first place in the longboard division, and Meagan Calloway, nabbing first place in the junior women’s division of the short board competition.

Other team members from Port Aransas included Brittany Tupaj, who took second place in the women’s shortboard and longboard division; Kalani Balcom, third place, junior women’s short board; Todd Olson, third place, senior men’s short board; Paul Balcom, fourth, shortboard legends division and senior longboard division; James Berry, fourth, men’s longboard; Jason Ardoin, fifth place, open shortboard.
