City might resurrect trolley’s airport stop

BY DAN PARKER SOUTH JETTY REPORTER

The Regional Transit Authority is asking the city of Port Aransas to reinstitute the Mustang Beach Airport trolley stop that the city council decided three months ago to eliminate due to a lack of riders.

The city council will consider the request at its meeting today, Thursday, June 18, at council chambers at city hall, 710 W. Avenue A.

The council on March 19 voted to remove the airport trolley stop and also stops at Gulf Waters RV Resort, Sandcastle Drive and on the beach at the south jetty. According to a count by drivers, those were the four least-used stops on the route of the trolley that makes circuits around Port Aransas every day.

A city count of riders at the stops tallied only 22 people using the stop at the airport throughout the entire period of Jan. 8-31.

The RTA recently asked the city to consider putting the airport stop back on the route, and city staff has agreed, said City Manager Michael Kovacs. Now the council must approve the idea to make it reality.

The city has had a lot of complaints about the airport stop being stricken, Kovacs said. With the airport an increasingly busy place, many more folks have been wanting to use the airport stop recently than in the past, the city manager said.
