April sales tax rebate ‘soft’
April sales taxes are submitted by retailers in May, and rebates are returned by the state to cities in June.
Texas Comptroller Susan Combs said the state collected $1.77 billion in sales tax revenue in May, a 5.2 percent decrease compared to May 2008.
“Weakness throughout most sectors of the economy resulted in a significant decrease in May sales tax collections,” Combs said. “While year-to-date sales tax revenue is up 0.5 percent for state fiscal 2009, further declines are expected this year.”
Combs sent June sales tax allocations of $297 million to Texas cities, down 3 percent compared to June 2008. So far this calendar year, city sales tax allocations are down 0.5 percent compared to the same time period last year.
Port Aransas received a rebate for April sales up by 0.24 percent over last year. For the year to date, however, rebates are down 2.93 percent.
The city deposited a check for $92,170.81 compared to last year’s rebate for the same period of $91,947.40.
