The Port Aransas Community Theater will present two variety shows on Saturday, June 20 and 27, at 7:30 p.m. Hometown talent will perform for two nights of fun and relief from the summer heat. A few regular PACT players, including Betty Crawford, Jack Dreessen, Phyllis Layne, Ginny Shaw and David Beane will perform musical numbers, and newcomer Ty Morris will sing and play guitar. April sales were soft in Port Aransas, but netted a rebate slightly more than was received for the same period in 2008. April sales taxes are submitted by retailers in May, and rebates are returned by the state to cities in June. Texas Comptroller Susan Combs said the state collected $1.77 billion in sales tax revenue in May, a 5.2 percent decrease compared to May 2008. More ... The monthly free, guided beach walk led by Shirley Fischer will start at 9 a.m. on Friday, June 26, under the purple flag next to Horace Caldwell Pier. Sponsored by the City of Port Aransas Parks and Recreation Department, the walk gives visitors and residents the opportunity to learn about all that washes ashore on Mustang Island beaches. On June 7, Kovacs finished his twoyear term as president of Region 9 of the Texas City Management Association. Handing off the presidency to Charmelle Garrett, assistant city manager in Victoria, Kovacs moved to the TCMA’s board of directors, where he will serve a two-year term. The Nueces County Historical Commission will celebrate the history of the United States Coast Guard on Mustang Island on Thursday, June 25, at 10 a.m. in Roberts Point Park. A state historical marker recognizing the Port Aransas Coast Guard command will be commemorated on the east end of the park. The marker is the result of research conducted by Dr. John G. Ford, a Mustang Island historian and head of the Texas historical marker programs in Nueces County. Anita Eisenhauer, president of the NCHC, invites all citizens to attend the event. More ... SOUTH JETTY REPORTER Fire damaged a large wooden cistern but didn’t harm the historic buildings at the Lydia Ann Lighthouse on Harbor Island on Monday, June 15, a fire official said. Contract workers were using a grinder to do some repairs to a cistern when a spark ignited the blaze about 11 a.m., said Scott Mack, chief of the Port Aransas Volunteer Fire Department. The cistern stored about one-third of the drinking water on hand for the lighthouse caretakers. More ... The Coast Guard searched Port Aransas waters without success after receiving a report that a man had jumped off Horace Caldwell Pier on Wednesday, June 10. Coast Guard Petty Officer Randy Hale said a fisherman on the pier reported seeing a man jump off the pier about 11 p.m. and start swimming toward the beach. The angler didn’t see the man reach shore, so the Coast Guard started a search, said Hale, of the Coast Guard Command Center in Corpus Christi. More ... Termites invaded the steeple at Community Presbyterian Church, putting the church bell it sheltered in danger if the steeple collapsed. Fundraising efforts have brought in about $6,000 of the $20,000 needed. Even then, while its compound leaves have five to six pairs of leaflets (being only 1/16 inch wide and a 1/4 inch long), are not too conspicuous. The tiny, purple, pea-shaped flowers, arising from the leaf axils have a lower white with prominent purplish-blue nectar guides. Another helpful identifier of deer pea vetch is the three or more twisting tendrils that terminate each leaf. More ...
