Port Aransas Boatmen, Inc., Hall of Fame
Marie Stiewig may be gone, but she sure hasn’t been forgotten -- especially not by the Port Aransas Boatmen. Stiewig will be inducted posthumously into the Boatmen’s Hall of Fame during the Deep Sea Roundup July 9-12. Stiewig, who died in January at the age of 71, didn’t fish, although she would go crabbing. Instead, her passions were gambling and social gatherings. Trustees approve resignation/release agreement with Byrd

Bob Byrd’s 11-year career with the Port Aransas Independent School District came to an end with his resignation on Wednesday, June 10. After a closed session during which the attorney for Port Aransas ISD spoke alternately with the board behind closed doors and Byrd and his attorney, the board returned to open session to unani- mously approve a resignation/release agreement with the Brundrett Middle School principal. The issues of lighting and noise will get yet another look by the Port Aransas City Council today, Thursday, June 18. The council will consider a third reading of an ordinance that would prohibit glares from outdoor lighting in parts of town not already affected by an existing ordinance. The council also will hear a proposal by Councilman Charles Bujan, who is suggesting creation of an ordinance that would require live music venues to install materials that would absorb sound, if they haven’t already. The Port Aransas Community Theater will present two variety shows on Saturday, June 20 and 27, at 7:30 p.m. Hometown talent will perform for two nights of fun and relief from the summer heat. A few regular PACT players, including Betty Crawford, Jack Dreessen, Phyllis Layne, Ginny Shaw and David Beane will perform musical numbers, and newcomer Ty Morris will sing and play guitar. Port Aransas kids experienced emotions that ranged from joy to awe to horror when they toured Washington D.C. recently. They played in jet fighter flight simulators at the Air and Space Museum at the Smithsonian Institution. They gaped at President Barack Obama’s motorcade as it cruised past. They toured a ton of memorials. They even found themselves on the fringes of a tragic event that made international news. More...

A Port Aransas surf team captured first place in the Texas Gulf Surfing Association’s state championships on Saturday, June 13, at Bob Hall Pier on Padre Island. The Board House surf shop team prevailed over about 10 other surf teams from cities including Galveston, Corpus Christi and South Padre Island. It’s been 20 years since a Port Aransas team won in the state championships, said Ted Nicholson, co-owner of the Board House. “We’re really proud to bring (the championship) back to Port Aransas,” Nicholson said. George Leon Barnes of Port Aransas died Saturday, June 13, 2009. He was 60. Barnes was well known to anyone who ever went to the Port Aransas post office, where he worked after retiring from the U.S. Army after 22 years of service. He served in Vietnam and was a recipient of the Purple Heart, which is awarded in the name of the President of the United States to any member of the Armed Forces of the United States who, while serving with one of the U.S. Armed Services has been wounded or killed, or who has died.
