Registration for the 26th annual Woody’s Powder Puff Fishing Tournament begins tomorrow, Friday, June 19, and fishing will commence early Saturday, June 20. The tournament for women only features two divisions. The professional division includes anglers who fish with a guide, and the amateur division is for anglers who forego that service. More ... Catch one for the kids! The Port Aransas Masters Billfish Tournament benefiting the Fred Rhodes Memorial Fund is set for Thursday, June 25, through Sunday, June 28. Fred Rhodes, who died in 1986, was a Live Oak County rancher, frequent visitor to Port Aransas and avid fisherman. The Fred Rhodes Memorial Pavilion in Roberts Point Park is named in his honor. More ... Andrew Nordquist of Tarpley is slammed by a wave while wade fishing on the beach in Port Aransas on Sunday, June 14. Nordquist caught a 28inch trout (below) the day before while wade fishing at the beach. More ... Dave Moats Jr., 8, of Port Aransas caught this 21-inch redfish on live shrimp. He was fishing the bottom of the bay with his dad, Dave Moats Sr., on Monday, June 15. More ... New Braunfels residents Alex Alvarado and his son, 5-year-old Jacob, try their luck fishing from the bulkhead at Roberts Point Park as the sun sets on a recent Sunday. (Reminder: Father’s Day is Sunday, June 21.) More ... Winds were up last weekend, but that didn’t keep anybody from catching red snapper. Almost every dock reported limits of both red snapper and kingfish all week. Bay anglers reported good catches of redfish and trout, but not as many trout as last week. The water was murkier with the winds, and the trout were hiding out. Live shrimp seems to be the bait of choice. Tom Creighton at Woody’s Sports Center said offshore anglers caught red snapper, kingfish and shark. Bay anglers caught mostly redfish and some trout. More ... Nena Murphy of Port Aransas caught this swordfish weighing over 100 pounds aboard the Hale Yeah with Capts. Ronnie Hale Sr. and Ronnie Hale Jr. on Sunday, May 31. Mac Fernandez of Adkins, in back, left, Brooke and Michael Noble of San Antonio, from left in front, and Sean Parker and Myra Moreno of Converse fished with Capt. John Stark on the Bill Busters I with First Mate Trent Hannah out of Woody’s Sports Center on Saturday, June 13. They brought in these red snapper of varying sizes, kingfish and shark. The biggest snapper weighed 18 pounds. More ... These folks from Leander brought in limits of red snapper and kingfish on a 12-hour trip with Capt. Ronnie Hale out of Fisherman’s Wharf on Saturday, June 13. More ... Jason Mayfield of Wimberly, center, was determined to catch a fish when he came to Port Aransas to fish with Joel Cullen, left and Mike Boss, right. They fished all day on Saturday, June 6, and caught nothing but trouble. The boat lost a propeller, forcing them to limp in from offshore at a snail’s pace. To add insult to injury, Mayfield dropped his wallet overboard while assessing the damage. Incredibly, they were able to get a new prop and get out again on Sunday, June 7, when Mayfield caught this 68.5-inch, 55-pound kingfish. More ... |
