The fishing is great!

Team Williams
      Nohea Williams, 2, left, and his dad, Corey Williams, caught this speckled trout together on Thursday, June 4. The two were surf-fishing on the beach near the Mayan Princess, when the elder Williams hooked the fish. Nohea reeled it in. Both anglers live in Port Aransas.

      Zoltan Svajba of Dallas caught this 47-pound amberjack while fishing aboard the LaPesca on a 24-hour trip out of Dolphin Dock on Sunday, May 31.

      This group from Austin brought these red snapper and kingfish in from a night trip aboard the Scat Cat with Capt. Russell Sanquinet out of Fisherman’s Wharf on Saturday, June 6.

SAMCA winners
      Ricci Pozzi, from left, Jarrett Finger, David Gonzales and Ken Wusterhausen won the guided division of the San Antonio Masonry Contractors Association Fishing Tournament on Saturday, May 30. The team took first place with a 28-inch, 8-pound, 2-ounce redfish, and first place heavy stringer with one redfish and five trout, weighing in at 28 pounds, 8 ounces.

      Jeffery Gregg of Dripping Springs caught this 63-pound ling fishing aboard the Tica Rica on Monday, June 8, with Capt. Peter Gainey out of Deep Sea Headquarters.

      P.J. Shackelford Jr., 7, of Port Aransas, caught this 25-inch trout surf-fishing at mile marker 23 on Tuesday, June 9, using croaker as bait.

South jetty sail
      Fishing aboard the Island Queen, deckhand David Hicks hooked into this sailfish, which he then handed off to an unidentified female angler. She fought the fish up to the boat. With the pole visible in the photo (not a gaff), the crew tried to free the fish. The leader broke and the fish swam away. The fish was caught just off the end of the south jetty.

Specks aplenty
      Mark Kephart, in back, and Wade McSwain, both of Cotulla, fished Baffin Bay with Capt. Kevin Callam of Rockport on Friday, June 5. They weighed these trout in at Woody’s Sports Center.

      On Friday, June 5, the Adam Hansen family fished on the Marlin Babe with Capt. Ron Pierson. The anglers brought in a good catch of kingfish and lings. The catch was hung at Woody’ s Sports Center.

      Joe Huerta of San Antonio, left, caught this 45-pound kingfish and David McMillin of Abilene caught this 37-pound kingfish while fishing aboard the Gulf Eagle on an eight-hour trip with Capt. Keith Schoolcraft out of Deep Sea Headquarters on Sunday, June 7.

Powder Puff: It’s a ‘girl thing’
      The 26th annual Woody’s Powderpuff Fishing Tournament is on for Friday and Saturday, June 19 and 20. The tournament for women only features two divisions. The professional division includes anglers who fish with a guide, and the amateur division is for anglers who forego that service.

TPWD is tracking tarpon via Internet
      A new cyber tool created by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department will help anglers find out where tarpon have been seen or caught in Texas waters and will help biologists learn more about tarpon distribution and movements. Anglers and boaters may participate by adding their observations of tarpon to the reports on the TPWD Web site.

Take a kid FISHING
      The 26th annual Coastal Conservation Association’s (CCA) Take A Kid Fishing Tournament was held this weekend at Woody’s Sports Center. With over 240 entries this year, the tournament was a huge success. Children of all ages fished in the tournament catching everything from tiny piggy perch to nice-sized redfish and kingfish. Every young angler who entered the tournament received a prize, and everyone enjoyed a hot dog lunch at the weigh-in.
