A student project has graced the front of Port Aransas High School with some fresh island-style landscaping, complete with tall palm trees and surfboard-shaped sidewalks.

The new look is the product of a PAHS National Honor Society service project, financed by a $5,000 grant from the Port Aransas Garden Club. The grant was awarded after a committee of NHS members pitched the proposal.

Garden Club members Susan Armanovs and Patty Eggleston spearheaded the project for the club.

The work, which took place from Spring Break to mid-May, had NHS students pulling out old railroad ties and bushes, leveling the ground and planting sod.

Concrete sidewalks were poured in the shape of surfboards, colored by concrete stain. The landscaping also included several boulders and five tall palm trees.

NHS students during the spring were seniors David Thrasher, Greg Anderson, Joseph Shrier, Sarah Armanovs, Ryan Phillips, Caitlin Pyle, Chloe Tugwell and Clay Hagedorn; and juniors Kasey Reed, John Eggleston, Rachael Phillips, Abby Kenigsberg, Paige Porter and Katie Voyles.

Several businesses provided donations or price reductions for the project, said Laurie Barello, the NHS group’s sponsor. Businesses included Tropical Palms, Island Construction, Joshua Tree and Port Aransas Coastal Homes.

School maintenance workers also helped.
