Students landscape PAHS entry
      A student project has graced the front of Port Aransas High School with some fresh island-style landscaping, complete with tall palm trees and surfboard-shaped sidewalks. The new look is the product of a PAHS National Honor Society service project, financed by a $5,000 grant from the Port Aransas Garden Club. The grant was awarded after a committee of NHS members pitched the proposal. Garden Club members Susan Armanovs and Patty Eggleston spearheaded the project for the club.

About to get dizzy
     Eric Stern, a 2009 Port Aransas High School graduate, takes a turn on the twirly spheres at Project Graduation on Friday, May 29. Project Graduation is an all-night, lock-down, alcohol-free party for graduating seniors and guests held annually at the Port Aransas Civic Center. The entire graduating class attended, as well as guests.The party ended at 4 a.m. Each graduate was presented with a $100 bill as they exited. One of the event organizers, Lorraine Stern, said “We are grateful to the Port Aransas community.

Reading program starts Wednesday
      Keep your kids reading and having fun doing so this summer. The Bill Ellis Memorial Library Summer Reading Club will begin on Wednesday, June 10. Members will meet Wednesday mornings from 11 a.m. to noon, for eight weeks. The program is geared toward children age four to nine. This year’s statewide theme is “Libraries: Deep in the Heart of Texas!”

Blue-haired teacher
     Brundrett Middle School teacher Kristi Longanecker, seated at center, poses with some of her eighth-grade history students after dying her hair blue and pink to satisfy her a deal she made with the students. She promised the students she would dye it pink and blue if 75 percent of the kids received recognition at the commended level for their performances on the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS). A healthy 65.9 percent of her students were commended, so she dyed her hair mostly blue with just a little pink.

One colorful kid
     H.G. Olsen Elementary School kindergartener Alex Cossey streaks through his part of a game he and fellow kindergarteners played on their last day of school, Friday, May 29. It was a relay race in which each student opened a suitcase, pulled out clothes, got dressed for a day in Hawaii, raced back to his or her line of teammates, took off the clothes and repacked the suitcase for the teammate, who then followed suit.

Substance abuse is topic at Monday’s meeting
New prevention program will be presented
      SOUTH JETTY Port Aransas High School Principal Travis Longanecker is inviting the community to a meeting to talk about new developments in the high school’s drug and alcohol abuse prevention, policies and programs. The meeting will be at 5 p.m. on Monday, June 8, at the PAHS cafetorium. Among topics to be discussed will be new online programs the school district has acquired to help students and parents on the subject of substance abuse.
