Voter ID long, slow burn for Legislature
      Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst and the Senate Republicans lit the fuse in January. The bomb went off in the House in May. In slow motion. And so the Texas Legislature quit its 140-day session on Monday – at least for now – without passing the controversial voter identification bill that so divided Republicans and Democrats. Gov. Rick Perry has until June 21 to decide which remaining bills that did pass to sign, veto, or let become law without his signature.

Keep cool about football issue
      Cool heads need to prevail when the school board meets Wednesday to hear a report from a committee charged with looking into the feasibility of adding football and volleyball to the curriculum in our school district. The parents who are spearheading this effort have my admiration and respect. They have a passion, a goal, and they are pursuing it. Cheers to them! Kudos to the school board for appointing a committee to look into the various aspects of the proposal so an intelligent decision can be made.

Windstorm bill is victory for the coast
      In the waning hours of the 81st Legislative session, The Texas House of Representatives passed comprehensive windstorm legislation that will re-capitalize the depleted Texas Windstorm Insurance Association (TWIA) without punishing policyholders living on the Texas coast. The legislation, House Bill 4409, funds losses up to $2.5 billion, which is the cost of a storm that might hit the Coastal Bend area every 100 years.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
      Clean the beach Beach litter is a worldwide dilemma. Starting with Port Aransas, the issue can be solved. While it would be naive to insinuate there are easy answers, it will be done. This is not about a person’s will, but rather God’s will. This is clearly a good thing.
