Snapper season is open and summer fish are in
Summer is definitely here.
Seemingly overnight, the summer fish moved in and are being caught by the boatload.
Several accounts of sailfish caught just off the end of the jetties were reported, a blue marlin was released, and plenty of ling, wahoo and dorado were caught.
By all accounts, the opening day of red snapper season was a huge success, with several boats bringing in limits.
John McNatt at Fisherman’s Wharf
reported great opening day catches of red snapper, ling, kingfish, vermilion snapper, dorado, shark and sailfish offshore. North jetty anglers are catching redfish, speckled trout and Spanish mackerel.
Mike Mann at Dolphin Dock
reported red snapper limits caught, “some huge kingfish,” dorado, ling and shark. The 24- hour trip brought in plenty of vermilion snapper and a large hammerhead shark.
Scott Garrison at Deep Sea Headquarters
said offshore trips brought in red snapper, ling, hammerhead shark , Atlantic sharpnose shark, kingfish, barracuda, amberjack and grouper.
Tom Creighton at Woody’s Sports
Center
said offshore anglers brought in red snapper, ling, wahoo, dolphin and kingfish. Bay anglers caught redfish, speckled trout and black drum. A party boat caught kingfish, ling and bonito in the ship channel and even briefly hooked a sailfish that got away.

said offshore trips brought in limits of kingfish, red snapper, triggerfish, ling, Spanish mackerel an a big hammerhead shark. Bay anglers have been limiting out on redfish and speckled trout.
