Birding for kids slated for summer
Push your birder out of the nest this summer.
Three introductory birding classes will be offered to kids 7 to 16 years during June.
The classes, sponsored by the Coastal Bend Audubon Society and the University of Texas Marine Science Institute, are free.
Students will learn how to use binoculars, how to identify birds using field marks, make a bird feeder and sketch birds or plants in the style of James Audubon. A greater environmental awareness is also a goal of the program.
The first class is on Thursday, June 4, at Hans Suter Park in Corpus Christi. The second is at Indian Point Park in Portland, and the third is at the Leonabelle Turner Birding Center in Port Aransas.
All sessions are from 9 to 11 a.m.
Students should bring binoculars if possible. Eight pair are available for loan on a first come, first served basis. Sunscreen, a hat and appropriate dress for the weather are also suggested.
Students may register for just one or all three sessions, but registration is required.
