Cops will pack 'heat' Saturday
      So many chilis, and just enough time to taste them all! The fourth annual Coastal Bend Law Enforcement Chili Cook-off will be held Saturday, May 9, at Roberts Point Park. The cook-off is sponsored by the Coastal Bend Peace Officers Association.

Sunset Sounds con Latin beat set for Friday
      The next Sunset Sounds concert is tomorrow, Friday, May 8, at 7 p.m. in the Patsy Jones Amphitheater in Roberts Point Park. ROMI, with Alma Squillante and Luis Villareal, will play acoustical music with a Latin flair. ROMI performs what they describe as a musical fusion of Latin, pop, rock, folk and jazz.

Port Aransas teams runners-up in statewide birding competition
      Two Port Aransas teams were winners in the 13th annual Great Texas Birding Classic, a week-long birding competition that concluded Sunday, May 3, with an awards banquet in Corpus Christi. The Laughing Gals, a team sponsored by the Port Aransas Chamber of Commerce Tourist Bureau, was runner-up in the Glider division of the Big Sit. Gliders are birders ages 14 to 18.

      Look for more Sargassum seaweed on Mustang Island beaches under a new attitude adopted by the Texas General Land Office (GLO). GLO Deputy Commissioner Jodenna Henneke, whose charge includes Texas coasts, dropped that news on a Sargassum symposium being held at The University of Texas at Austin marine Science Institute on Wednesday, April 29.

      Jenna Ward, an eighth grader at Brundrett Middle School, is an old hand at singing the national anthem. On Wednesday, May 13, she will sing it again at the Hooks' game at Whataburger field in Corpus Christi, at 7 p.m. The Hooks will play the Frisco Rangers.

      The Port Aransas Education Foundation sponsored two teams of students who took part in the Great Texas Birding Classic on Saturday, May 2. The foundation also helped buy 12 pairs of high-quality binoculars for students. Birders, both children and adults, compete in the Birding Classic for the highest number of birds species recorded.

      There's no free lunch, but there is a free Yoga on the Beach class, Saturday, May 9. Nancy Myers will instruct the free class beginning at 8 a.m. next to the Horace Caldwell Pier at the end of Beach Street. The public is invited to attend the class, held the second Saturday of the month.

      Mother's Day is Sunday, May 10. Celebrate with a free swim at the Port Aransas Community Pool, 700 Clark Parkway. In honor of the day, all mothers will be admitted at no charge from 1 to 6 p.m., when accompanied by a child swimmer, courtesy of the City of Port Aransas Parks and Recreation Department.

Golf tourney raises money for day school
      Golf isn't child's play, but the money raised by a charity tournament at Newport Dunes Golf Club on Friday, May 1, will go a long way toward providing recreational possibilities and more for certain young Port Aransans. The tournament's proceeds will be used for playground improvements at Trinity-by-the-Sea Day School and for the school's student scholarship fund.

      The Mission Aransas National Estuarine Research Reserve anniversary celebration on Wednesday, May 6, was postponed until further notice. The event, hosted by the University of Texas Marine Science Institute, was postponed as precautionary measure. No suspected cases of flu have been reported there.

      Port Aransas' first Pony League team, the Mariners, finished their first season on Tuesday, May 5, with a win against Portland 8-5. They ended with an 8-4 record. The league was formed as a transition league for players as they prepare for high school baseball.

Marathon man
      Seventy-five -year-old Albert E. Burrier, formerly of Port Aransas, finished the 113th Boston Marathon with a time of five hours, five minutes and 59 seconds. Now a resident of Carmine, Burrier took sixth place in 75-to-79 age group. The April 20 marathon was 26.2 miles long.

Tasting and tour for education
      The Harbour Condominiums and IBC of San Antonio hosted an invitational wine tasting and tour of the new facility as a fundraiser for the Port Aransas Education Foundation on Friday, May 1. According to foundation president Janice Roberts, more than $7,500 was raised at the event, which was attended by approximatedly 75 guests.
