The Port Aransas High School girls' golf team is heading for state competition, apparently a first for the school's golf program.
The team - Kelsey Ortiz, Kelsey Abel, Hannah Jones, Katie Voyles and Emily Scott - became the Region 4 Class 1-A champs after two days of competition at the Brenham Country Club Monday and Tuesday, April 20-21. That victory earned the team the opportunity to compete at the state level.
The state competition will be Monday and Tuesday, May 11-12, in Austin, said Steve Reaves, coach of the team. Reaves, who also is the athletic director for the Port Aransas Independent School District, said it's the first time he knows of that a PAHS golf team has made it to state.
The win at region was a nail biter. At the end of the regular competition, the PAHS team was tied for first place with teams from Yorktown and Ganado. To win, the PAHS team had to play one more hole against the other two teams, and Port Aransas ended up with the best score on the hole.
