'Slam' Poetry competition set for Friday

Reynolds memorial planned
      A memorial gathering for Gerald Wayne Reynolds will be held at the VFW Post 8967, 311 N. Alister St., on Saturday, April 4, at 1 p.m. All friends and family of Reynolds are invited to a potluck lunch to celebrate his life. A Navy veteran, Reynolds died at the age of 71 in Port Aransas on Wednesday, March 11.

City Council delays decision on fee changes
      The Port Aransas City Council has decided to delay a decision on what to do about staff recommendations to change a wide variety of city fees. City staff presented council members with a list with proposals for dozens of proposed fee increases and a few decreases. Many fees would remain the same under the plan.

Women are focus of April First Friday
      The Art Center for the Islands will hold its First Friday art reception on April 3, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the art center, 323 N. Alister St. The April exhibit will feature the works of women artists who live on, or are inspired by, the islands. Laurie Reed, Michelle Huels, Mary Calhoun, Narice Hopp, Monique Dix, Pat Dittberner and Linda Hansen will exhibit their work.

      Claude Brown is not only a man of the people. He is also a man of machines, and he has built a doozy. Brown, the mayor of Port Aransas, calls it the "Walkin' Tall," and it is 34 feet long and 14 ½ feet tall, to the top of the radar antenna.

Cat is gunshot victim
G Kitty lucky to be alive
      An 8-year-old Port Aransas housecat named G Kitty is recovering after suffering a gunshot wound that nearly killed him, his owner said. G Kitty, who got his name because he looks like the "Garfield" comic strip cat, was walking through his neighborhood when he was shot on the night of Monday, March 16, said his owner, Ivette Sullivan.

Boat stolen here found at South Padre Island
      Law enforcement officials in Port Isabel have recovered a boat that was stolen from Dennis Dreyer Municipal Marina in Port Aransas. The boat, Over the Limit, was found, undamaged and tied to a dock in Port Isabel, on Saturday, March 21. Valued at $42,000, the 31-foot vessel belongs to Ken Gillespie of Port Aransas.

Four pit bull incidents reported in three days
      Port Aransas Animal Control Officer Jim Williams said he handled four cases of pit bull misbehavior at the beach during Spring Break. On Friday, March 20, a Texas Parks and Wildlife Department game warden saw two pit bulls fighting at Pole 24, Williams said. The fight, which was encouraged by the dogs' owners, was broken up by Port Aransas police, Williams said.

Man nabbed for relieving himself on side of PAPD
      A 19-year-old Ingleside man was arrested early Saturday, March 21, for allegedly urinating on the side of the Port Aransas Police Department building, police said. Ambulance personnel reported seeing the man relieving himself outside the building, police said.

Search continues for overboard shrimper
      The U.S. Coast Guard was searching on Wednesday, March 25, for a man who apparently fell from a shrimp boat about 35 miles east of Port Aransas. Mike Griffin, an operations specialist with Coast Guard Group Corpus Christi, would not release the man's name because officials had not been able to locate his relatives. He said the shrimper was a Mexican national.

      Law enforcement officers dealing with Spring Break crowds in Port Aransas made 337 arrests during a 17-day period this month, according to statistics released by the Port Aransas Police Department.

Technology -- a little scary
      It's a bit frightening. The tiny black card arrowed and pointed to in the photograph is a memory card. It can contain eight gigabytes of data. It's so small two of them can fit on my fingernail. A gigabyte is 1,000 megabytes and this disk can hold eight of these. A megabyte is 1,000,000 bytes. A byte is a basic computer word.

Termite damage found in Community Center
      A contractor helping remodel the Port Aransas Community Center has found termite damage in the building's wall, said Port Aransas Building Official Joe Lamb. The contractor found the damage while removing old dry wall inside the building on Thursday, March 19, said Port Aransas City Manager Michael Kovacs.
