VFW hog roast, auction are Saturday
      Eat some hog, benefit the young and maybe win a prize, all in one night. The Moore-McDonald Veterans of Foreign Wars post 8967 will host its annual auction, hog roast and prize drawing on Saturday, Feb. 14. Donations of items for the auction and drawing are being accepted now, and may be dropped of at the VFW post, 311 N. Alister St.

Concert on Monday to feature sounds of flamenco, bossa nova
      Flamenco and bossa nova music will heat things up at the Winter Sounds concert Monday, Feb. 16. The concert, which is free and open to the public, will be at the Civic Center, 710 W. Ave. A., from 7 to 9 pm. Lela Caldwell, a 1999 PAHS graduate, and Daniel Rosales will perform Nuevo flamenco and bossa nova guitar music.

      "The Bird Lady" has taken flight. Leonabelle Chaplin Turnbull, known in Port Aransas as "The Bird Lady," died Friday, Feb. 6, 2009, in Corpus Christi. She was 83. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 15, at Community Presbyterian Church, 113 S. Alister St.

Baptist BBQ tickets on sale
      Tickets are now available for the First Baptist Church barbecue chicken dinner. Proceeds from the dinner will help fund the church youth camp.       The weather forecast office in Corpus Christi has added a new feature to its weather Web site. With no critical weather in the area, the Corpus Christi office of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's National Weather Service recently began testing marine point forecast and hourly weather graphs for coastal marine forecast zones.

      Max, a yellow labrador, grew weary after watching Dennis Griggs and Grady Jones work on some wiring on Jones's boat in the Dennis Dreyer Municipal Harbor. So Max made himself comfortable in a forward seat, basked in the sun, rocked with the waves and settled in for a nap.

Turtles surface on the beach
      Our work at the Animal Rehabilitation Keep has suddenly turned turtle. While we have continued to care for the 26 sea turtles that are staying the winter with us, only one live turtle had come in since December last year. That is until this week when no fewer than six turtles were rescued alive and three were found dead; all in only four days.

Lobster dinner to benefit RFL on February 22
      The First American Eagles Relay for Life team will hold a Lobster for Life fundraiser dinner on Sunday, Feb. 22, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Moby Dick's, 517 S.       The last hurrah before the Lenten season when Christians traditionally make sacrifices is Fat Tuesday, Feb. 24. In Port Aransas that means the Mardi Gras parade sponsored by the Port Aransas Leisure Society (PALS).       The Port Aransas Computer Center has a new schedule of classes. Sessions will be held on Wednesdays from 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. at the center, 430 N. New stripes
      City employee Michael Sanchez and other members of a street work crew recenty laid down new street striping at the intersection of Cotter Avenue and Alister Street. The product, known as Premark, is set onto the asphalt then burned onto it with a heat gun. The striping is a more enduring substance than paint.

The City of Port Aransas has set up a municipal bonds plan to refurbish many of its streets, and the city council is unanimous in its opposition to a countywide drainage taxing district.

County keeps drainage district on table
      The Texas Legislature is busy filling positions on various committees, and it is too early to file any bills such as enabling legislation to allow a drainage taxing district in Nueces County. State Rep. Todd Hunter (R-District 32) said he has heard that county officials were seeking approval from cities for the drainage district, but he has not seen any proposals.

Invasive lighting sparks complaints from several Port Aransas residents
      Several burglaries in the parking lot at the Dunes Condominiums prompted management to install security cameras, and then to install bigger, stronger lights to make the cameras work properly. The result is that the parking lot on Lantana Street now glows like it was daytime, but the neighbors are complaining the new lights are invading their right to darkness.

Sloopy safely home in Illinois
      Hang on Sloopy … and hang on she did. Sloopy is a longhaired brown tabby cat that is about 10 years old and who resides in Rockford, Ill. She comes down to Port Aransas for vacation, and the last time she was here she went missing, on Nov. 23, 2008.
