Wetlands center offering tours
      Twice weekly, guided tours of the Wetlands Education Center (WEC) that are open to the public begin today, Thursday, Jan. 29. Tours will be offered at 2 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays. The tours start one hour before the 3 p.m.

Ready for tours
      Carolyn Rose, photographed Jan. 27 at the Wetlands Education Center (WEC), is the new volunteer coordinator for the Mission-Aransas National Estuarine Research Reserve, of which the WEC is part. Twice-weekly guided public tours of the WEC begin today, Thursday, Jan. 29. The WEC lies on the grounds of the University of Texas Marine Science Institute.

PACT play concludes Sunday
      This weekend is the last opportunity to see the Port Aransas CommunityTheatre winter musical production, entitled "4th Of July," and bid on a patriotic quilt. Performances are at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Jan. 29 - 31 and at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 1.

Groundhog Day Shadow Stroll to spot 'Phil'
      Punxsutawney Phil has a cousin. His name is Port A Phil. The public is invited to celebrate Groundhog Day with a stroll through the park to find "Port A Phil". The annual event is set for volunteers to help the island groundhog who has once again lost his way.

      Helen Frances Swartz of Port Aransas will give an organ concert on Sunday, Feb. 8, at 3 p.m. The program, at the Community Presbyterian Church, 113 S. Alister St., will include light secular and sacred music. Swartz holds certificates from the American Guild of Organists, an A.B. degree from William Jewell College in church music and history and an M.S. Ed.

      The engagement of Nicole E. Trowbridge of Port Aransas to Ethan H. Veeneman of Cascade, Colo., has been announced by Corrien Scivally, sister of the bride-elect. The prospective groom is the son of Hayes Veeneman and the late Zoe Veeneman. The couple plans to be married in Colorado and reside in Pensacola, Fla.

State coffees set at JELM
      The Joint Effort Leisure Ministries (JELM) Center will hold State Coffees through February. All of the coffees are held in the Pollock Center, 129 S. Alister. Guests are asked to bring snacks, finger foods or desserts to share.

Brown Bag retraces war
      The route of an ambulance driver through France, Belgium and Germany during WW II will be the topic at the next Brown Bag lecture on Wednesday, Feb. 4. That driver is the brother of Port Aransas resident Dr. John Fucik who will tell the story. Fucik will use slides to accompany his talk. He, along with his brother and grandson, retraced the route on a trip through Europe.

      The Art Center for the Islands' First Friday reception has a special theme this month. "Hearts for the Arts" is an annual silent auction with a Valentine theme. It is a fundraiser for the art center. The works featured in the auction have been donated to the center by various member artists.

      They range from the massive to the compact, and from the vintage to the brand-spanking new. The recreational vehicles that call Port Aransas home this time of year are as varied as the Winter Texans who own them. For Billy Jack (that really is his full name), a small camper resting astride his Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck is plenty.

Beach bonfires require permits
      A Nueces County burn ban and its imminent renewal in February has little effect in the City of Port Aransas, but residents are urged to exercise care during the current drought season. "In Port Aransas, people call us and say 'can we have a campfire on the beach?'" said Tyner Little, a government affairs employee with the Nueces County Commissioners Court.

Copeland earns academic honors at UNT
      Reid Copeland, a 2008 graduate of Port Aransas High School, has been named to the Dean's Honor Roll of Scholars in his first semester at the University of North Texas in Denton. He is majoring in electronic media arts. Copeland is the son of Michelle and Richard Sledz of Ingleside and Clay Copeland of Bedford.

Sheepshead are biting: Time for tacos
      This time of year is when the sheepshead are plentiful along the channel and the jetties. This distinctive black and white-striped fish have those chisel-like front teeth for eating barnacles and small crabs. Sheepshead is somewhat tricky to fillet because of the thick skin and the many bones, but the meat is delectable and sweet.

      "False Pretenses" (1935) is the next feature of Port A Movie Time on Saturday, Feb. 7, at the Community Center, 408 N. Alister St. The movie is a comedy starring Irene Ware, the 1926 Miss America, and Sidney Blackmer. According to Oldies.com, "One night in a chance encounter, pretty waitress Mary Beekman (Irene Ware) meets millionaire Ken Alden (Sidney Blackmer).

      Experience will dominate the day at the 13th annual Bill Morgan Memorial Winter Old-Lympics Tennis Tournament, scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 21 and 22. The tournament, which encourages camaraderie between Winter Texans and Port Aransas residents, is for partners whose combined ages equal 100 or more.

Amos to speak
      Tony Amos will present "Arctic Adventures: Measuring a 12,000-foot Deep Ocean from a 6-foot Thick Ice Flow" at a lecture open to the public tonight, Thursday, Jan. 29. The talk is part of the University of Texas Marine Science Institute's public lecture series. It begins at 7 p.m. in the Visitor Center, on East Cotter Avenue just before you reach the beach.
