Relay check STAFF PHOTO BY MICHAEL CARY Robyn McKinney, customer care associate for CenturyTel in Port Aransas, hands over a $500 check to Lisa Shelton to begin the city's annual Relay For Life fundraiser, a program founded by the American Cancer Society that brings a community together for one night, Saturday, Jan. 24, to raise funds for research and awareness of the devastating effects of cancer. The Relay for Life kick off rally is tonight, Thursday, Jan. 15, at the Port Aransas Community Center, 408 N. Alister St., from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Informational booths will be on hand, as well as luminaries, games for kids and snacks.

Cancer survivors Bruce Furlow and Charlie Zahn and cancer caregiver John Fucik will give brief speeches at the event.
