Birding 101
Young birders, above, looking through their binoculars at Leonabelle Turnbull Birding Center on Thursday, June 26, are, from left, Michaela Ybarra, 9, of Harlingen; Ashley Hooten, 9, of Corpus Christi; and Levi Stark, 10, of Portland. The three were among children taking part in Birding 101, a program introducing birding to children. The program was run by The University of Texas at Austin Marine Science Institute and the Coastal Bend Audubon Society. Among the birds the children saw was a tri-colored heron (left) that was wading through shallow water, snacking on small fish. (One of the fish is visible, sticking out of the bird's bill.
