Garden Club honors Marjorie Wohlschlag

The Port Aransas Garden Club has honored Marjorie Wohlschlag with a framed tribute recognizing her for more than 42 years of service to the club.

The Garden Club made the presentation during a meeting on Wednesday, June 11. Wohlschlag was in a Corpus Christi hospital, ill, and so fellow Garden Club member Helen Garrett accepted the award in Wohlschlag's place.

Garrett later presented the award to Wohlschlag in the hospital. Wohlschlag has since been released from the hospital.

Wohlschlag has taken part in a wide variety of work for the Garden Club over the years. That work has included taking part in a campaign to decorate trash cans around town and gardening at the Leonabelle Turnbull Birding Center.

Wohlschlag has stayed involved and done a lot to strengthen the club, said Jean Peters, the Garden Club's parliamentarian.

"She and some other others (in the organization) have been the backbone of this club and put us where we are," Peters said. "She's a joy."

Wohlshlag worked as a kindergarten and pre-kindergarten teacher at the Port Aransas Independent School District from 1965 until her retirement in 1987. She later worked for years at H.G. Olsen Elementary School, reading to children, and helped at Brundrett Middle School.
