KBH running for governor?
That would be governor. Matter of fact, there were lapel stickers at a Hutchison reception that said "KBH for Gov." And Hutchison cut some distance between herself and the current Republican holder of the job, Rick Perry, who's said he'll seek re-election in 2010. At the Republican State Convention, she criticized two of Perry's top initiatives: the Trans- Texas Corridor and a new business tax. She said here that she's fighting against retroactive tolls - "tolls on highways that have already been paid for by Texas taxpayers. These initiatives are a violation of the public trust. And that is why I strongly oppose the Trans-Texas Corridor." She got a standing ovation. In Washington, in a speech to Texas business leaders, she referred to the business tax as "an abject failure" - even though it has yet to be collected. One thing she and Perry did agree on: both said Texas Republicans should fall in behind John McCain for president. Hutchison also warned that the Democrats have their hearts set on flipping Harris County to the Democrats as they did Dallas County in 2006. Her goal, Hutchison said, "is to take back Dallas County, to keep Harris County, to make sure that we lead our charge for the United States of America." • • • Harris County Democrats. . . . Local Democrats capitalized on the Republican confab here. A halfdozen candidates for Harris County administrative positions held a press conference outside the convention center, to press their case that the GOP has put a cloud over the top county offices. The cloud, or clouds, the Demos said, include former District Attorney Chuck Rosenthal resigning after ethics allegations, and County Commissioner Jerry Eversole being investigated over whether he spent political contributions on things like a golf trip to Florida and other things. David Mincberg, the Democrat opposing appointed County Judge Ed Emmett, said the Republican officials "have cost Harris County taxpayers millions of dollars in lawsuits and legal fees and eroded the public's confidence in our county government." • • • Tiger and Barack . . . A friend recently theorized that the huge popularity of golf superstar Tiger Woods helped pave the way for the presidential candidacy of Barack Obama. The idea is that Tiger, who just won the latest U.S. Open in a dramatic 19-hole playoff Monday, June 16, is multi-ethnic, including part African-American. The relaxed racial attitude helped along by Tiger's huge following made the rise of Obama, the son of a black African and a white American, a political representation of the American melting pot. Both Tiger and Barack are articulate, thoughtful, have big smiles and good, quick senses of humor, are polite, and photogenic. Both are enormously popular, to the point that they are now household names. • • • God Bless Texas. . . . That saying with which the late Lt. Gov. Bob Bullock ended every speech has now been appropriated by the guy who now holds the office, Republican Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst. The Dew, as some senators call him privately, had thousands of white T-shirts distributed at the convention with "GOD BLESS TEXAS" surrounding a Texas flag on the back, and "David Dewhurst Lt. Governor" and a smaller Texas flag on the front. • • • And The Bumper Sticker, Please . . . . The state GOP is asking rank and file members to help come up with an appropriate slogan for this year's election. "We are calling on you to share your wit, humor, and maybe even a bit of sarcasm. You see, we need to spread the word across our state about Barack Obama and his liberal schemes," says the party's e-mail entreaty. "We are asking you to send us just the catchphrase, slogan, or comment for the bumper sticker. We'll take care of the design and all the rest." Deadline is noon Friday, June 20. |
