Birding classes for kids slated in June

The Coastal Bend Audubon Society, the University of Texas at Austin Marine Science Institute and Mission-Aransas National Estuarine Research Reserve have joined forces to introduce youngsters to birding this summer.

Birding 101 classes are being offered free of charge to kids seven and older. Classes will introduce students to wildlife habitats and basic bird identification using field marks.

Three separate classes are scheduled in June at three different locations. Students may sign up for individual sessions or attend all three.

The first class will be held today, Thursday, June 5, from 9 to 11 a.m. at Hans Suter Park on Ennis Joslin Drive in Corpus Christi.

The second class will be held at Indian Point, on Hwy 181 near Portland, on June 19, from 9 to 11 a.m.

The third session is scheduled at the Leonabelle Turner Birding Center on Ross Avenue in Port Aransas, from 9 to 11 a.m.

Birders should wear hats, use sunscreen, dress for the weather and bring binoculars if possible. Eight pairs of binoculars are available for use on a first come, first serve basis.

Transportation is not provided.
