Rothe
Rothe was born Oct. 3, 1915, in Medina County (Seco) to Augustus C. and Teresa Courand Rothe. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Ann Strain Rothe and brother Gerald Rothe. Survivors in addition to his daughter, are two other daughters, Ann Duvall (Walter) of San Antonio and Alice (Hillard) Jones of Corpus Christi; a son, C. N. "Nick" (Lynn) Rothe of San Antonio, eight grandchildren, including Nick Magee of San Antonio, formerly of Port Aransas; 11 great-grandchildren, and care giver and friend, Lisa Scrimpsher. Following his graduation from St. Mary's University, he attended St. Louis University Medical School. He was commissioned as an officer in the U.S. Army, and at the outbreak of World War II was called into active service. Rothe joined the Army Air Corps and served as a flight surgeon in the 494th Bomb Group in the Pacific Theater. While serving there, he was awarded numerous medals, including the Bronze Star with "V" Device for his actions in rescuing a wounded soldier on a South Pacific Island. Following the war, Rothe continued his military career in what then became the United States Air Force, retiring as Deputy Surgeon General for the Strategic Air Command (S.A.C.). After his retirement from S.A.C., he served as director of the Bexar County Metropolitan Health District for a number of years. Funeral mass was held Wednesday, June 4, at 9 a.m., at Our Lady of Grace Church in San Antonio followed by internment at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery. |
