A fourth-grader from Lago Vista Elementary School, near Austin, reacts unfavorably to a mantis shrimp held by Dr. Rick Tinnin, director of marine education at The University of Texas at Austin Marine Science Institute, during a field trip aboard the research vessel Katy. The end of the school year sees a jump in the number of schools requesting field trips; last week, the institute hosted 14 of the two-hour-long trips.
