Port Aransas police officers are joining other officers across the state and the nation in wearing black bands across their badges this week in observance of National Police Week.
Mayor Claude Brown declared the week of May 11-17 as Police Week in Port Aransas and urged citizens also to observe the week, which commemorates officers who have rendered dedicated service to their communities.
May 15 has been National Peace Officers Memorial Day since President John F. Kennedy signed a law declaring that date in 1962. In 1994, Congress amended the law, and in signing that law, President Bill Clinton directed all U.S. government buildings to fly national flags at half-staff on May 15.
The flag in front of the Port Aransas Police Department flies at half-staff this week.
In Washington, ceremonies will include the annual candlelight vigil at the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial, police survivors' seminars and the National Peace Officers' Memorial Day Service.
The week of May 15 is annually declared National Police Week.
