City advisory board vacancies will be filled at meeting tonight

City council members will look at filling vacancies on two city boards when they meet today, Thursday, May 15, in the council chamber at 710 W. Ave. A.

Vacant are three positions on the Parks and Recreation Board and four seats on the Board of Adjustments and Appeals.

The terms of Don Anz, Debby Kalke and Charlie Zahn are expiring on the Parks and Recreation Board. Zahn is chairman of that board.

Applications for the three vacancies have been received by incumbents Anz and Zahn as well as from Jim Brown and Linda Zahn.

Brown, the superintendent of the new Newport Dunes Golf Course on State Hwy. 361, has been a resident of Port Aransas for 15 years and has 20 years' experience in the recreation industry, his application says.

Linda Zahn, a current member of the Planning and Zoning Commission, points to 38 years' residency in Port Aransas, and to her involvement in programs that address the recreational needs of citizens during her life here.

The Parks and Recreation Board's five members must be qualified voters of the city. Members are advisors to the city council in the planning and development of parks and recreation facilities.

The Board of Adjustments and Appeals terms of Wendy Clark, Don Huff and Marion Sweatt are expiring, and the city has received a letter of resignation from Janetta Davis, another member of that board, leaving four vacancies to be filled.

Clark, Huff, Sweatt and Flip Burleson applied for those four vacancies.

Burleson, a contractor and a Port Aransas resident for 14 years, said his experience as a contractor, a homeowner and a landlord would be of benefit to the board and the city.

The five members and alternate on the Board of Adjustments and Appeals be qualified voters in Port Aransas and must own real property in the city. The board hears and determines appeals from the refusal of building permits or from administrative decisions by the city building official.
