Blessing
Anglers and boat owners, including at least one rower, gathered on Saturday, May 10, for the annual blessing of the fleet ceremony at Dennis Dreyer Municipal Harbor. The ceremony, which originated in Mediterranean nations, is intended to guarantee a safe and profitable year of fishing. Organizers estimated 20 boats cruised up the harbor, stopping to be blessed. Catholic, Episcopalian and Presbyterian pastors participated in the blessing, led by Catholic Bishop Edmond Carmody of Corpus Christi. A bouquet, placed on the water at the start of the ceremony by Jeane Bowman, was in remembrance of mariners who have been killed while at sea.
