| The Port Aransas High School Marlins baseball team nabbed the first game of the bi-district championship but lost the second two games of the best-of-three series against the Ben Bolt High School Badgers.
The Marlins beat the Badgers, 7-6, in a game played on the neutral turf of San Diego High School on Friday, May 2. Then the Marlins lost, 9-3, in a game played at Gregory-Portland High School the next day. The third and deciding game, played 30 minutes after the second game, was won by the Badgers in a 14-15 heartbreaker for the Marlins.
It was the first time in the nine-year history of the baseball program at PAHS that a Marlin team had made the playoffs.
Marlins Coach Bryan Flack issued the following statement about the playoff games and the season.
"Under pressure, some people step up, and some step back. During crunch time, we had trouble fielding the ball. That is the beauty about baseball. When the ball is hit to you, you can't hide, and everybody's eyes (are) on you.
"I don't fault the kids. They have not been in that position very often in their lives. The seniors have started something that no other group before them could do: Make the playoffs in both baseball and basketball. I just wish I had them longer. However, the underclassmen are prepared and ready to pick up where they left off.
"The kids and I thank all the people that showed up to the game. It made it memorable. For the faculty and family members that couldn't and did not want to show up, the kids noticed.
"We had a great season. Overall, we were 15-9 and won a playoff game. The best ever performance by a Port Aransas baseball team. I am very proud of these boys this year. They believed in themselves two years ago when nobody believed that they could make the playoffs or finish a year, and they showed them."
