Early voting gets off to quick start; last day to cast ballots is Tuesday

Unofficial reports indicate that early voting in Port Aransas was exceeding its big city neighbor, Corpus Christi.

At mid-day Tuesdy, April 29, the second day of early voting, 71 had cast ballots, according to election clerk Joe Bomarito. He said Corpus Christi only had 40 as of Monday, the first day of early voting.

So, Bomarito said, "We're doing pretty good."

Early voting continues through Tuesday, May 6. Election Day is Saturday, May 10.

Requests for mailed ballots will be received through tomorrow, Friday, May 2, and must be returned by Tuesday, May 6.

The Community Center, 408 N. Alister St., is far enough along in renovations to host early voting, although voters must enter via the handicap ramp on Brundrett Street.

Voting hours are from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Sunday. Hours on Monday and Tuesday, May 5 and 6 will be 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

CITY COUNCIL

Incumbent Claude Brown and challenger Charlie Zahn are seeking the mayor's job.

Races down the ballot feature candidates who are unopposed in their bids for city council. They are Place 2 incumbent Keith McMullin, Glenda Ballentine for Place 4 (being vacated by Bubba Jensen because of term limitations) and Place 6 incumbent Mike Hall.

SCHOOL BOARD

Two races will be on the school district ballot. They are for Place 2 between incumbent Place 4 trustee Michael Garlough and former trustee Chuck Borders.

Place 3 is a race between incumbent trustee Lorraine Stern and Jay Jones.

Place 2 school board trustee Dr. Ken Dunton is unopposed for the remaining two years of Garlough's Place 4 position.

Garlough earlier this year was appointed to fill Place 4 until the May election. It was left vacant by the resignation of Bob Smith.

Dunton opted to seek the remaining two years in Place 4 to complete projects with which he has been involved.
