Mixed doubles brings home team's first first place trophy

David Thrasher
The Port Aransas High School varsity tennis team brought home its first first-place finish last week.

The mixed doubles team of Meagan Callaway and David Thrasher not only won first place, but made it to the finals for the first time ever at the Aransas Pass Tennis Tournament on Tuesday, March 11.

They beat the same Ingleside team that beat them in the previous Aransas Pass tournament last month.

"I am so proud of them. They have been working really hard, and it is starting to pay off," said tennis coach Piper Boies.

Also in mixed doubles, Kevin Drewry and Charlotte Lucke fell to the Ingleside team in split sets in the semi-finals.

In boys singles, Kasey Reed took consolation.

"Each match was a tough one. He had to play really well to take consolation. He has grown a lot as a player in the past year," Boies said.

In boys doubles, Eric Hawes and John Sanchez played a good team from Ingleside and "almost had them in the semi-finals. It was a very exciting match," according to Boies.

Meagan Callaway
Katie Fries and Kelsey Abel drew a tough first round opponent. They fell to the team that won the tournament in the first round, and then fell in the consolation bracket to the team that won consolation.
