Mission work topic of next Brown Bag Lecture Series Learn about construction work in missions at the next scheduled Brown Bag Lecture Series, then about fulltime RVing at the following lecture. The meetings begin at noon on Wednesdays at the Pollock Center, 129 S. Alister St. Community members are invited to bring a lunch to munch as the knowledge is dispensed. On Jan. 30, Sharon and Norris Stricker will speak on their mission trips to New Orleans and Mexico. Formerly Midwesterners, the Strickers first came to Port Aransas in 1995. Both are Presbyterian elders. He currently serves on the session at Community Presbyterian Church, and she is the moderator of the Presbyterian Women. Experienced in the construction trades, they have participated in mission work in Mexico and New Orleans. In January 2008, the Strickers visited a Presbyterian church and grade school in Belize. The couple will share stories, experiences, photos and more relating to mission work on homes, churches, schools as well as the people they have met on their journeys. Ann and J.D. Hodges will speak on full-time RVing on Feb. 6. The couple is originally from Virginia, but has been residents of Texas for more than four years. They winter in Port Aransas, then travel around the country for the rest of the year. When the weather starts to get cool, they start to move south. The Hodges are members of The Good Sam Club and travel to many of the State Samborees. They have given full-time seminars at a number of the State Samborees. They have experienced many things people question about full time RVing and are glad to have the opportunity to pass some of this information along to other fellow RVers. The seminar includes tips on getting mail, money and medicines, places to stay, ways to earn money and how to enjoy life on the road full time. Ann Hodges line dances and teaches line dancing at State Samborees and fills in at the Pollock Center when needed. J.D. enjoys golfing and selling on eBay. He says he is better at selling on eBay than playing golf, which his golfing partners readily concur. The couple participates heavily in pot Lucks and eating out, especially at Dairy Queen. "Wow those Blizzards are good," they said. The City of Port Aransas Parks and Recreation Department co-sponsors the series with the Joint Effort Leisure Ministry (JELM). Donations for the Pollock Center are accepted and appreciated, but are not necessary to attend. Call the parks department at 749- 4158 for more information. |
