Poinsettia graduation
      Cheryl Park, left, Steve Huey and Renee Gamel had a laugh in the gymnasium at Port Aransas High School when Huey arrived to pick up his poinsettia for Christmas. The plants - 225 of them - were sold to benefit Project Graduation for Port Aransas High School.

PAISD art students big winners
Student show at Art Center for the Islands
      Monica Brescia chose cacti and armadillos for a sixth grade art class project at Brundrett Middle School. Her rendition of Texas-style boots - in purple, green, blue and tan hues - won a first place ribbon at the Annual Middle School and High School Student Art Show and Awards on Sunday, Dec. 7, at the Art Center for the Islands.

Skate party slated Dec. 20
      Kids of all ages are invited to celebrate Christmas on wheels Saturday, Dec. 20, from 2:30 to 5 p.m. They can skate to Christmas music and eat Christmas cookies, courtesy of the City of Port Aransas Parks and Recreation Department, at the Community Park Rink, 700 Clark Parkway.

Sharing our talents
      It seems every year I write an article about how lucky the children are in the Port Aransas ISD. I can't help myself when I walk through the halls and see working moms and dads who have taken time off from work to come up and volunteer by listening to children read. Others who may or may not be retired take time to mentor a child once each week.

Grant enables library to buy art
      SOUTH JETTY Bill Ellis Memorial Library recently received 40 high-quality reproductions of notable art after winning a grant. Marilyn Cook, a teacher and dyslexia specialist at the Port Aransas Independent School District, applied for the grant on behalf of the library. The grant was not for money, but for the prints themselves.

Tempest victorious in playoffs
      A Port Aransas youth soccer team took third place in its bracket at the western district finals, held Dec. 6-7 in Corpus Christi. The Tempest, which consists mostly of girls under 12 years old, took third place in the under-13 girls' division. The team won one game and lost two at the finals.

Church bazaar
      Sam Ellis, 5, and his sister Anna, 7, chose a reindeer made of palm tree bark when they shopped at the Community Presbyterian Church's annual Christmas bazaar, which opened from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Dec. 6.
