EDUCATION NOTES
Role of Student Council at BMS
Hello. My name is Jocelyn Flood, and I am currently the Student Council President at Brundrett Middle School.
I am writing this article to give everyone an idea of what we do as members of the Student Council and of what is expected of us.
Student Council is our first introduction through school to see how the election process works and to be a part of an election.
It is pretty much like any other organization that you would run for and be elected to an office.
We campaign for ourselves prior to Election Day.
We make and hang posters around the school and sometimes hand out treats in hopes of receiving votes.
When running for an officer position, we must also speak before our student body and give a brief statement to give reasons they should vote for us.
The students in the entire class then cast their ballots, and that is how our elections are decided.
We have 25 students on Student Council.
There are seven sixth-grade representatives, seven seventhgrade representatives, seven eighth-grade representatives and four officers.
There are responsibilities that come along with being a part of Student Council.
First, members must maintain passing grades in all subjects to be a representative, and officers must have an average above 80 in all classes.
Members also are required to have records of good behavior and conduct, and are expected to be good examples and leaders to the rest of the student body.
Other responsibilities include making the morning announcements at the beginning of the school day, running the school store and attending regularly scheduled meetings.
During meetings we assign announcement duties, discuss any projects we are interested in doing, and go over the schedule of upcoming events.
Student Council also holds fundraisers. Our most popular fundraisers include waffle breakfasts and school dances.
School dances are mostly for the student body, but they also show how the Student Council is an active part of school events.
In the past, we have used some of the monies raised to beautify our school. A couple of examples are the murals of Marlins that line the walls in our cafeteria and a scrolling marquee that displays the events for that week of school.
All student council members go on field trips to Fiesta Texas at the end of the year to have fun and celebrate a year of hard work and commitment to our school.
