Comptroller offers prepaid tuition fund
      The Texas Tuition Promise Fund — a new prepaid college tuition program that lets families start paying for college tuition now, based on prices determined by today's tuition rates, has been announced by State Comptroller Susan Combs.

Pumpkin Patch set by day school
      Trinity-by-the-Sea Day School is hosting its annual Pumpkin Patch on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 17 and 18. Friday's patch will be from 4:30 to 7 p.m., and Saturday's will be from 8:30 a.m. until the pumpkins are all sold. Arts and crafts, face painting, storytelling and snacks will all be available to families while they shop.

Volunteers, donors create reading garden
      An outdoor alcove that once was little more than a plot of dirt and weeds at Port Aransas High School has been transformed into a wellmanicured reading garden, thanks to the work of a group of volunteers. The effort started with Kate Prejean, a teacher who, in the 2007- 08 school year, taught the PAHS service learning class - a group that does community projects.

TAMUK to host PAHS robotics meet
      Port Aransas High School Island Robotics team members switched their B.E.S.T. hats for some Javelina pride, as the annual robotics competition has changed hands and was hosted by Texas A&M University - Kingsville. In previous years the competition was held by B.E.S.T. Robotics Inc.

Food pantry ready for pumpkin patch
      Volunteers and donations are needed at the Sand Pumpkin Patch on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 24 and 25. Monetary and canned food donations will be collected for the Port Aransas Food Pantry. Sand sculptors will produce a pumpkin patch out of sand, then the public is invited to carve faces on them.
