Girl to hold big drawing for charity
      Jade Mouton, a Port Aransas 11- year-old who has been working for months to raise $7,500 for the American Heart Association, is within sight of her goal. On Saturday, Oct. 11, she will hold a drawing for prizes donated by area fishing guides, restaurants and condos. Tickets will be drawn at the Best Western, 400 E. Ave. G, at 3 p.m.

Garden Club to pay visit to 'Bible' garden
      The Port Aransas Garden Club will visit the St. Patrick's Catholic Church Garden in Corpus Christi on Tuesday, Oct. 14. Carpools will leave the Family Center IGA parking lot, 418 S. Alister St., at 9 a.m. Dr. John Fucik of Port Aransas assisted in the design of the garden, which includes many plants identified in the Bible.

Next yoga class to be on Oct. 11
      Nancy Myers, a resident instructor, will give a free Yoga on the Beach class on Saturday, Oct. 11, at 8 a.m. Participants should bring a towel or mat, and meet at Horace Caldwell Pier on the beach. The monthly class, open to the public, is sponsored by the City of Port Aransas Parks and Recreation Department.

      While keeping watch over the runners on Mustang Island Gulf beach at Post 20 on Saturday, Oct. 4, Port Aransas police spotted a tiny crawler trying to negotiate the dunes steepened by Hurricane Ike. It appeared to be a baby sea turtle headed in the wrong direction.

Chamber accepting tree fund donations
      Help celebrate the spirit of Christmas in Port Aransas by making a contribution for decorations at Roberts Point Park. The money will be used to add a 40-foot lighted tree in the middle of the park. In an effort to spruce up the park, residents, businesses, organizations, visitors and others are encouraged to make a donation to the Christmas tree fund.

      In this election season, if there's one island wildflower that's a shoo-in for ever-blooming I'd cast my vote for Indian blanket. Its willingness to show off a flower or more almost every month of the year makes it almost too commonplace to be fully appreciated.

      The whole family can walk or jog for free in the Port Aransas Community Park pool on Saturday, Oct. 18, from 11 a.m. to noon.       City hall is urging Port Aransas citizens to vote on Tuesday, Nov. 4 on a $4.9 million bond issue proposition to fix 22 of the worst roadways in the community. Those streets, located throughout the Port Aransas city limit, are termed "the dead streets" because of their advanced state of deterioration.

      They ate, they drank, they were merry and they raised big bucks for the cause of educating Port Aransas children. More than 300 folks partied at Mardi Gras in October, a fundraiser held by the Port Aransas Education Foundation on Friday, Oct. 3, at the Port Aransas Civic Center.

Water district protesting rate hikes
      Port Aransans will see higher water bills beginning in November, but island water authorities say they're taking action at the state level in an effort to reduce hikes in the future. The board of directors of Nueces County Water Control and Improvement District No. 4, which serves an area including Port Aransas, voted on Wednesday, Oct. 1, to raise rates.

These four surfers waited with surfboards in the Corpus Christi Ship Channel off the Port Aransas Nature Preserve at Charlie's Pasture until a ship came through, throwing up a wake large enough to ride on Saturday, Oct. 4.

      In the 70's, jazz wordsmith Michael Franks sang, "And my baby cooks her eggplant about 19 different ways. Sometimes I just have it raw with mayonnaise." I was crazy about Michael Franks songs and eggplant. When I began to look for recipes, there were more like 1,900 ways to cook eggplant.

      This grackle perching on a sunflower plant at dusk on a recent day at the Port Aransas Nature Preserve at Charlie's Pasture was pretending to be a raven in a big, scary tree. With Halloween coming on Oct. 31, everyone is getting into the spooky spirit.

      The Art Center for the Islands and the Port Aransas Chamber of Commerce - Tourist Bureau will present the second annual fall art walk, "P.A. Art About," on Saturday, Oct. 25, from 4 to 7 p.m. The self-guided tour encourages interest and promote art and culture in Port Aransas. It begins in Old Town and winds out to State Hwy. 361.

      Katie Snyder, 11, and her friend, Krista Adams, 7, admire the handiwork of a neighboring beachgoer last weekend as clear skies and mild surf attracted a lot of people to the beach. Snyder and Adams, both from Wimberley, were in Port Aransas with their parents, Beth and Larry Snyder and Delia and David Adams. The Adams family owns a house on the island.

Mount and her husband own Sassy Carts, a Michigan company that manufactures the carts. They donated the cart to the Kiwanis Club for the drawing.

Latchkey asking for pubic to donate Halloween costumes
      "When you weed out your Halloween costume collection, think of us," said Latchkey program director Patsy Balcom. The kids in the Latchkey program hold talent shows and play dress-up, and would love to have any cast-offs, including dressy clothes, Balcom said.

      Libby and Jimmy Smithers are residents of Seven Points who also maintain a boat at Island Moorings. They enjoyed some chili and cornbread from the "Let It Smoke Cookery/Buc Days" booth on Saturday, Oct. 4 at Sharkey's, the site of a CASI-sanctioned chili cookoff that weekend.

City hall to close for Columbus Day
      This weekend will be a three-day holiday for some and business as usual for many. Columbus Day, Monday, Oct. 13, will be marked at Port Aransas city hall, but only by locking the front door and not answering the telephones. Employees will be inside packing up documents from the fiscal year just ended and getting set up for the new fiscal year.
